Wondering what to do next . . .

Nurses Career Support

Published

So, I've just about completed by contract w/ my first assignment on a stroke/telemetry floor. It's been a wild ride, but I've survived it. I've gotten a lot of telemetry experience, and some neuro, as well as some basic nursing and med surg experience.

Problem is, I have no idea -- no EARTHY idea, what I want to do next. I think about pediatrics which I could parlay into a lot of things, yet I chafe at the though of dealing with parents.

Then I think about the ER, or the ICU, but fear that I might not be able to cut it there.

I think about becoming an NP someday, and could easily get into grad school this fall. My managers suggest to me to just stay on the unit where I'm comfortable while I'm in grad school, which isn't a bad idea -- but our unit is also a risky place to work w/ falls and alzheimers, etc. I'm just worn out from it and wish so badly to find something less strenuous.

In short, I want to continue to grow as a nurse, but I"m also nearing 50 in 4 years. I want to get back to grad school, but I also need the full time income. I want to make a contribution to nursing, and yet part of me also wishes to do something I'd really enjoy -- like being a lactation consultant.

I know this is rambling and disjointed -- but it's where my brain is right now w/ nursing --just feel bogged down and clueless, although gratified I've made it to this point.
