Will a B.A. in Business Admin be helpful?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi there!

I have a situation. I am currently about 2/3 of the way through a B.A. in Business Administration program and I think it's useful, sometimes interesting, but not really what I want to do with my life. I want to become a nurse! However, I can't just apply to my school's nursing program because I go to the University of Washington. You know, the #1 nursing program FOREVER. Here's my problems:

-I haven't taken any nursing prerequisites yet

-Those sorts of class are notoriously cutthroat at UW

-UW also requires 100+ hours of healthcare experience which I just don't have

I was thinking I would finish my B.A. and then spend a year at a community college taking pre-recs, focusing on my grades, and volunteering or working to get my hours of experience. Then I would apply to the ABSN at UW and various RN programs at community colleges.

Do you think a B.A. in business would make me more employable as a nurse? Would it offer opportunities for advancement, higher pay, etc? Would a B.A. in business and an associate's degree in nursing be inferior to a BSN?

Thanks friends!

I have a BS in Business Admin and it has not helped me one iota getting employed as a nurse. No comparison to BSN. Get the BSN if at all possible.

Just out of curiousity - what makes UW the "#1 nursing program FOREVER"??? I wasn't aware of that distinction in our profession.
