Where are all the nursing jobs?

Nurses Career Support

Published

I'm going to be moving from Ohio to anywhere. Looking at Phoenix, Sacramento or Vegas but I am considering all possibilities. I have 13 years experience as an RN in an acute care setting. Where are all the jobs? I've been reading about so many different cities where the job market is awful. I don't want to move somewhere that there are very limited number of jobs. Any suggestions?

Or really anywhere in Minnesota. Most of my new grad class has been hired at good starting salaries.

Minnesota is awesome. I moved here from Colorado 10 years ago and I'd never go back.

Born and raised there. Moved away at age 30. NO desire to return! Winters are brutal, compared to Denver. And then in the summer you have mosquitos. Really, the only times of the year I found enjoyable were April/May, and then the 6 weeks after the first frost.

You should check out Utah. The one major healthcare employer in the state is a great company to work for. Lots of jobs available. Amazing benefits. Unwavering commitment to best practice and nurse empowerment.

IHC has best practice, but I definitely wouldn't say they have "unwavering commitment to nurse empowerment". They are anti-union, go through several nurses, and do not pay well. Other than that...overall they are good to work for.

There's a ton of Nursing Jobs here in Atlanta. Pay averages 30$ an hour, if not negotiate 30$ an hour you will get it. I've had 34$ hour jobs as well and they were not PRN. These were not hospitals though. They were snf. Hospital pay here is about 27$ hour. Emory is best hospital here along with northside and wellstar. The work ethic down here is completely different than Ohio. I worked at the Cleveland clinic, it was amazing. Everything else has been a huge disappointment. I just have to live with that from this point on because I'm not moving back to Ohio. Lol. Quality care with low nurse patient ratio doesn't exist here. I had 3-4 patients at the clinic here it's more like 7-8 in the hospital setting. I'm currently looking at job offers right now, it's not a easy process. Currently a snf offer but patient ratio 32-40, terrifies me. Still not sure what I'm going to do. The hospitals I mentioned are over a hour drive for me so until I can move closer to the city next spring I am hoping to find something closer to me. Traffic is awful here just awful.

@neurogirl77- I moved from Illinois to CA to take my first correctional position, via a contract agency. (I lived in CA years ago and have grown children here.)It is a federal facility, one of the detention facilities where ICE and Border Patrol place illegal immigrants. We take care of them until they are deported or released. We also have US Marshal inmates, who are usually just there until they are sentenced, and do their time elsewhere. Needless to say, the USM inmates are the main "trouble makers" lol-but they always fight with each other, not staff. We might be assigned to sick call, intake, blood sugars/insulin, pill line, or in the clinic for simple physicals, urgent calls, etc. That said, I do like corrections. Perhaps you could look into that? Many times you are safer than in a LTC or dementia facility-some of those people can really hurt you!
