Private Duty Nursing

Nurses Career Support

Published

So, I have done private duty nursing off and on for several years now. I think this can be a good career choice for some nurses. I have more work opportunities than I can handle. I could work 100 hours a week if I chose. There are numerous private duty agencies in my area, and I suppose probably all over the US. There are sick people everywhere so I imagine there are probably PD agencies everywhere. The pay isn't great, but it's not terrible either. The work is much less demanding than working in a hospital or nursing home or home health. I know there have to be a lot of older nurses out there who would like to work but just don't have the energy they used to have. PDN can be great, you're providing specialized care to ONE person, so there is not that much running around. You can care for adults, children, infants. Most clients have trachs and vents, but not all. However, if you know how to work with vents you will have more cases to choose from. Some agencies offer detailed training, some don't. Generally, most agencies in an area will offer the same pay. You can work full time or part time. Agencies always need help on nights and weekends. Every day my agency is begging for help. You may want to consider this field of work.

Agreed! There is such a need, and such reward in that area.
