How long do you plan to stay in med surg first time job before trying for speciality

  1. How long should a new grad work a med surg job before they try to pursue the speciality of their choice?

...from 100 years to less than 0 days. What specialty are you hoping for? If it's NICU, I'd try to go straight to NICU. For other specialties, a solid med/surg foundation could be a wonderful thing.

My goal is to get into labor and delivery or NICU. I am wondering if I should just start applying to fellowships after 1 year of med surg or if I should do med surg longer.

If l&d and NICU are your areas of interest, I think you should try for a new graduate position in one of those areas. Adult med surg would be almost useless for NICU work. I could see it being helpful for L&d, but still very different.

The longer you stay in med/surg (especially if it is adult care, not peds) ... the harder it will be to transition to NICU. If you really want NICU, you should try to get there sooner rather than later.
