how do i get the training?

  1. I am a new nursing student and I am not sure on how to get the training I need. I want to get into the surgery field or pediatric intensive care how do i go about doing that? Thanks in advance for your help.

    For specialized fields like those, you don't really need to do anything other than finish nursing school and get your license. If you get hired into one of those areas, as a new grad or a transfer from another department, you'll get an extensive orientation that will provide you with all the training you'll need. You'll get some exposure during nursing school, but not much in those two areas. You might want to get a job as a CNA or nurse tech while you're in school, to get your foot in the door of these kinds of units. Good luck!

    One of my classmates will be working in the PICU upon graduation...where she's been working for the past year as an Apprentice Nurse. It's at UC Davis and they apparently have an excellent program there, both for students and new grads. Plus, her starting pay will be awesome. They have really taught her a lot....far more than she's learned in clinicals.

    You will get an introduction in nursing school. Start with that and then go from there as more clinical opportunities to work as a nurse intern come your way.
