Fellow nurses,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm trying to figure out what I would like to go back to school for to earn my masters. The only experience I have is in postpartum and antepartum. I'm sure I'll be picking up some L&D experience soon. All I know, is in the future that I don't want to be a bedside nurse. I thought about something along the lines of CNS or nursing informatics, but am not sure how promising these two careers are in terms of job security, job availability, and income. Any insight?

Informatics is and will be a hugely hot area, IMO.
Do you have an IT or math background?
Good luck!
No IT or math experience. Just healthcare. Although, I do assist the informatics committee by volunteering at work to educate coworkers on new documentation implementation, etc. I've researched a lot about degrees that offer nursing informatics. Just have heard it's more if the experience that gets your through the door not the degree.
The degree, IMHO, will offer you an objective measure of your interest, understanding and credentials.

I feel the CNS is being phased out on favor of the NP. Informatics is trending upward and will be very useful. I think I'm going for administration, myself. 2015. Good luck to you
Thanks for your insight savoytruffle. So you'll be working on your MHA? That's awesome! What's your background in as an RN? Administration is something I considered too.
I finished my BS last year. I want to start my MS next year. I'm currently looking for a job, so classes now would only complicate matters. The MS I want focuses specifically on nursing leadership and admin. Not overall healthcare administration. I want to lead nurses. I want something to call my own, and to work toward positive changes in long term care.
