Nursing Assistant Jobs

Published

Hello,

I have just completed my first year in a 2 year ADN program. Currently I work in the field of mental health. I would like to work as a nursing assistant in a hospital. I believe doing so would increase my comfort level with providing patient care. Problem is, I have applied for jobs at several hospitals but have not received responses.

Anybody else have this problem? Is it different once you graduate?

I'm not positive, but I think you have to take the CNA state exam, even if you have finished your first year of nursing. You don't have to take the CNA classes, but I think the exam. Maybe that is why they haven't called you? I am sure your nursing school should be able to guide you in the right direction, or email or call one of the schools that offer CNA classes - like Naugatuck Valley CC.

actually you don't have to take the cna classes or the exam. here is the info on cna's from the state of ct department of health

requirements for cna certification

in order to be certified on the connecticut nurse aide registry, an individual must have completed an approved nurse aide training program, and sit for the state competency examination within 24 months from completion of the class.

a student enrolled in a lpn or rn program may request to challenge the test by providing original transcripts of their education verifying they have completed the basic nursing fundamentals and skills that are covered in a nurse aide training program.

here is the link to the state of ct dph regarding cna's http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3120&q=387686

No you don't need your CNA certificate if you finished one semester clinical. I am a PNA at St. Francis hospital, I have my CNA certificate as well... They pay a little higher to do CNA duties if you are in a nursing program. However, you do have a higher chance to be a PNA if you already have your CNA certificate...

What's a PNA????

I am not sure about your state but if you want to work as a CNA, I think you have to take the exam, otherwise, you have to show that you have received the proper education and training from your first year of ADN schooling and "challenge the test". I would get in touch with the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health or get some information from one of your nursing instructors in your ADN program about it.

PNA is Professional Nursing Assistance at st. Francis hosital.

just one semester of clinical and you don't need your CNA license. However, CNA is a really short course anyways (only 2 weeks of training for me) and you probably have a better chance of getting in !
