I will not judge you but I will tell you what you are in for and your possible options. BON's will allow you to self report, and "Volunteer yourself for monitoring or they will place you on probation. If you wait for the BON to act it may be a year or more until they get back to you. That's a year that I suspect you will not be able to work since you actually did have a positive test. You might try getting work in an especially underserved area like a nursing home as long as you can stay away from whatever your substance of choice it that got you caught. Both Volunteer and Probation program are notoriously expensive and restrictive and last anywhere from 3 to 5 years. On average these programs can cost $35,000.00 to $55,000.00 and once you are in you really don't get a choice about wanting to quit. The BON's job in every state has a mandate to protect the public from impaired nurses and they take this job very seriously.

This will not be an easy row for you to hoe - but if the end result means that you become a sober person and are able to resume your career - it may be worth it to you.

    Good luck to you
