Nursing Administration positions

I have a non-nurse co-worker who currently has a Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science. She is looking to further her education with a Master's Degree and has been "advised" by a University of Phoenix representative that a Masters in Nursing Administration would be a logical degree program, because "forensics is closely related to nursing."

I think she's being fed a load of BS. I have never seen/heard of a nursing administrator who wasn't also an RN.

Anyone?

Sounds like they are trying to make a buck. You'd have a hard time getting a nursing admin position without an RN (how do you even get such a degree without it?) If she's interested in getting a BSN first, Fitchburg State in MA has an online master's in forensic nursing.

Can you even get an MSN without an RN license?

Oy. Makes me even more scared of the for-profit college sector. I know people that have gotten their degree from UOP and I have had my doubts about the educational quality (in my own mind...never spoken to them) but this is a little over the top, especially if it is true.

I certainly hope they don't talk your friend into enrolling. I don't think anyone would hire him/her without having experience as an RN.

the nurses I have worked with in administration had previously worked in some area as a nurse for a minimum of 5-10 years.

UOP is 100 miles off the mark (big surprise). However ... I bet if she combined her forensics degree with an RN she would become quite marketable (i'm thinking an ER setting ?). As a nurse of course ... she would have to want to be a nurse.

We are all RN's - all have BSN and usually a MSN too.

RN + Forensics have opportunities with SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) programs plus with medical examiners, law enforecement, etc....

UOP would be my absolute last choice for anything. Most if not all universities offer online courses so you can get a Hopkins degree, a UVA degree, a UMMC degree, etc...... so why would one chose UOP???

I believe UofP has already paid one hefty fine to the governement for shady recruiting practices. You would think they would have cleaned up their act after that.

there are direct entry masters programs for non-nursing college graduates (entry-level/2nd degree master's) program: admits students with baccalaureate degrees in other disciplines and no previous nursing education. program prepares graduates for entry into the profession and awards a master's degree in nursing.

however, uop does not have such a program. several on the west coast.... rarer on east coast. check out these schools to see if any have nursing forensic course that can be taken as electives in addition to nursing entry level classes.
