Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hi I'm 22 years old I have always had this dram of being a nurse but I have 4 fingers (missing my pinky) on each hand and Limited mobility range of motion at the wrisk on both hands but each hand can move a certain way. I want to work with children or in the NICU (would this be a problem). I learn pretty quickly and I work very hard. I would like to know if this would interfere with me working and finding work and also could it interfere with me wearing gloves an also I have small hands not to small but small

Have you watched youtube videos of various nursing skills? You may be able to do many skills without any problem, but you would need to be assessed in person to be sure. Before you enter into a nursing program, consider asking if the lab instructor can assess your ability to physically do the basic skills.

Specializes in ICU.

I would get with my doc and see what he says. See if he thinks it is possible. I'm sure there are many areas you can go in to, but I wouldn't think NICU would be one. I would thing to get tubes in and IVs in, you would need a very steady hand and use of all of your hand. I could never do NICU as my hands shake because of side effects of meds and I couldn't see myself sticking premature babies with needles. Freaks me out!!
