Nurses to vote on industrial campaign

Meetings of nurses will continue across the New South Wales Hunter region this week to vote on a campaign against what they believe are excessive nursing workloads in public hospitals.

Last Friday nurses at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital voted to oppose a plan to open another 1,000 hospital beds in NSW over winter until they get a guarantee the beds will be properly staffed.

Nurses Association general secretary Brett Holmes says the State Government's changes to enrolled nurse training will also be discussed at the meetings.

"There will be meetings across the rest of the Hunter this week...there are important issues to consider, proposals from the Government to open the thousand beds plus other proposals to increase the number of enrolled nurses being trained," he said.

"That adds to the workload of nurses and there's been no consultation about that proposal," he said.

At least you Aussies get to vote on things and have unions. I've been thinking that working conditions may be better in Oz than they are in The U.S.
