Vet prescribed CBD oil for my cat

  1. I wish I was joking - but sadly I am not. I know that someone here will be able to educate me, and I promise I am being as genuine as I possibly can....

I have an aging cat that is a giant pain in my butt. She has struvite crystals and is possibly in the beginning stages of kidney failure (so says my vet). Sometimes she goes outside the litter box due to pain or whatever and its temporary. My house was broken into 2 weeks ago and since then she hasn't used a litter box (I hate cat pee). I took her to the vet and was told that its most likely anxiety. None of my cats were injured - but even though the back door was open - none of the cats left the house (which is odd because given half a chance she will run outside and eat grass).

My vet prescribed CBD oil for her and I'm terrified it will make me positive on a drug test (I start school in January). I am naive and ignorant because I haven't ever done any sort of drug. I've only been drunk a few times and mostly by accident. I just really don't understand.

I put a link below for the item that she prescribed to her, and it has an actual prescription label on the bottle. My boyfriend said that since it doesn't have THC in it, I'll be fine. Do I need to wear gloves when I give this to her, do I have to worry about petting her? I wore them the first time, but trying to hold a long hair cat with gloves on presents a challenge in itself. I do wash my hands with soap when I'm done. I feel like I'm being ridiculous, but I really don't want to get thrown out of school before I even get in because I have a neurotic cat. It seriously sounds ridiculous typing this - I'm sure the school will think I'm a lying loon and probably ya'll too. FYI - I graduated from high school over 25 years ago - I should know better but I just don't.

Thank you in advance for not giggling at me in writing - although I deserve it.

I would wear gloves. I have no idea how weed works, I just happen to believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Our facilitator brought up CBD oil recently as something NOT to take. Apparently the drugs tests are not that savvy and are still showing THC when it's used. That's just my two cents... I would even hold my breath when administering it. Like I said, I have no idea how it works. But if we can opo positive for alcohol when inhaling hand sanitizer, I wouldn't risk it.

I had NO idea that sanitizer did that. I'm already terrified - I have really long hair and decided not to cut it just so that I would have proof if necessary. This stuff may actually be working already for her though. I watched her just stand in the box... she went outside the box, but at least she was standing in it - that's improvement!

If it's oral drops for the kitty, with gloves you're probably okay. Think of it like nitro paste..don't let any touch your skin. Petting her, I should think would be fine.
I had some guy in a holistic pet store try to sell me a CBD oil diffuser for the house once. I went looking for a product that was similar to Feliway, when my cat was having some anxiety issues. He got all huffy when I said I wasn't interested in it. "It's not pot!" Yes, I know that but I'm not explaining to you why I'm not interested....jerk...

Feliway is so expensive! I read that peppermint is also calming (so is lavender but I loathe lavender). I bought 5 peppermint twist from Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday for less than 1 feliway. Heres to hoping it works!

CBD oil is legally sold in all 50 states because it is made from hemp plants, not from the THC-producing marijuana plants. The plants are cousins, but they are not the same plant. Hemp plants contain a negligible amount of THC, which is why they are legal federally for agriculture. You can't get "high" from a hemp plant or its derivitives.

I completely understand! I just started school, too. I just thought it might help some folks if I shared that article, as I didn't realize that they were different plants until recently either, and I don't think it is common knowledge. :-)

The problem is that the hemp plant does still contain a small amount of THC and there is no regulation on CBD oil, so there is no way to know exactly how much THC may be present in it. You can still test positive for THC if you're using or exposed to CBD oil. It's best for health professionals to stay away from it due to the risk of license troubles.

I would be very cautious in exposing yourself to anyform of CBDs. We actually did an experiment at work with a client because she was worried about her husband using CBd cream for his pain and testing positive if he ever had a random at work. She used the cream and sure enough tested positive for thc despite it being thc free. Hope that helps you figure things out.

you should be ok as long as you handle the pills with gloves. Just keep a copy of your cat's prescription.

OP, my cat became afraid of the litter box after having a bladder issue. I sprinkled this product in her litter box and she got over her aversion in about a day! Just make sure you start with a clean litter box because she liked it so much that she rolled around in it at first!

This collar also seemed effective at calming her down and making her less skittish when her bladder was hurting her. It lasts a while, but I would have been nervous to leave her alone with it all day (in case it got caught on something). Luckily I was working at home at the time.

Hey I think laws against humans smoking weed out to be thrown out as they are an assault on personal liberties and are frankly senseless. They have more to do with social philosophy and forced adherence to a particular viewpoint than anything medical or legal in my opinion.

Having said that you (like I) are in monitoring purgatory. This being the case we have to respect the reality of our situation. I don't know if this stuff would make you pee hot for weed. I do know the BON is not gonna hear any argument about how you were treating your cats ailments prescription in hand or not. You will likely not have any problems if you wear gloves and never actually come in physical contact with the stuff. At the end of the day it's risk versus reward. I guess if you love your cat enough you will do it. I would not but I sure as heck wouldn't judge you for taking a contrary action. Good luck!!!!!
