Help for RN in recovery and on probation in Oregon

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi, I've recently had my suspension lifted and am now able to return to work. I am in recovery for ETOH abuse which got so bad that I ended up showing up to work still intoxicated after a night of heavy drinking. I honestly didn't realize or even feel like I was still drunk since I worked evening shift and hadn't drank since the night before. But, my alcoholism was so severe that my tolerance was really high- I could drink pints of vodka and feel completely sober. Anyway, I went through inpatient rehab, then an intensive IOP, currently living in a sober living house, attend AA and RN support meetings everyday. I was wondering if anyone knows of any probation friendly employers in Oregon, the Portland area would be ideal, but, I can move. I'm running out of money and am really worried that if I don't find work soon I'll end up homeless. It seems like every drug rehab says they want two years sober before they'd hire anyone in recovery, I only have eight months. I have been a psych nurse for over twenty years and really feel that I won't be able to be hired back into that field considering I showed up to a psych facility job drunk and because clearly, someone drinking to that level suffers from mental health issues themselves (for me, I was self medicating my severe depression). I don't think I will have any luck with dialysis because I've only ever worked psych- I have zero experience in any other type of nursing. I've been applying to LTC facilities but, so many say they won't take anyone with an encumbered license plus, I again, have no experience in this area. Any leads would be greatly appreciated as would any advice. Thanks
