Nurses picket hospital, hospital blames nurses

Two complaints filed

Nurses who say they work hard to ensure quality care for patients at the Boston Medical Center announced yesterday terms of their contract with the hospital are not being honored.

The nurses cited below-minimum staffing requirements, overtime pay deficiencies and vacation pay problems. The nurses picketed the hospital last week.

Nurses allege BMC hospital management threatened to discipline nurses who took part in the protest...

commuter what do you mean a slum hospital.if you mean an inner city yes .bmc and boston city are now a combined hospital system with 2 campuses.bmc actually has a good rep. no place is great or perfect they have same issues as every other hospital.i stand by the nurses and wish they succeed .if their union is mna then they have a fairly useful and successful union.no i do not work there but my mom had valve surgery there .they did very well.

I'm not judging anyone, but how did that help the patients? If they are so unhappy with their jobs, why don't they go elsewhere? Just asking. You may now begin reaming.

Believe me, I wish the union the very best, however BM has had MORE than its share of drama between the administration and its slaves...um...staff.

And how does going elsewhere help the patients? Then the hospital not only continues to be understaffed with only the workers who for whatever reason choose to stay (close to home and don't have a car; finally figured out the health insurance and don't want to have to start over with a new program; close to retirement and need just a few more years to qualify for best benefits; etc). The hospital will just claim that it's the nursing shortage causing their problems with hiring and keeping staff. If the nurses can force the hospital to improve their working conditions and to honor their contracts, then the patients will be cared for by nurses who aren't overworked, thus it seems to me this type of collective action could help the patients more in the long run than individual nurses choosing to go elsewhere.
