Nurses with Juvenile Felonies?

Published

Hello there I really want to major in nursing become an R.N. and so on but I have a pretty big juvenile record starting off with Residential Burglary(more than once) Damage to county property, and a GTA that got knocked down to Driving a Vehicle without owners Permission. I started off at 13 all the way until I was 17 and the whole time I violated probation about 15 times. I live in California and I'm honestly so stressed out because I'm 20 now and have a 6 month old daughter and I want the best future for me and my family. Now im thinking and I have already started taking classes that will lead me to nursing but hoping I wont be denied. I've always loved nursing and considered it for a while, it's my passion so I don't want to look into another career unless need to be. So if theres any nurses that had their license granted or denied or maybe even have feedback for me PLEASE reply to my post thank you in advance!!

This could definitely affect your ability to become an RN. It would be a good idea to email or call the CA BON and ask some questions, and/or contact a lawyer wth knowledge of the BON and ask for advice. Maybe expungement or other options might be available that make your record less of a ding on your background check. However, if this went on until age 17 and you are only 20 now, that is only 3 years since your delinquency stopped. This also does not look good because you dont have very long of a "good" streak to outweigh the poor choices you made.

I dont mean to be a downer, just honest. Be prepared for this to not be an easy road if you decide the sturggle is worth it to become an RN. You may just be able to become one, but it will not be easy for you. GL

no I understand you, but by the time its time to face the bon it will be 7-8 years. my only felonies are from when I was 13 &14 none past that only violations but either way I would hate to set myself up for failure and go thru the struggle that all these nurses are going thru. to top it off I live in California & I see they're tough :( I hate my past and wish I would've been so much smarter, although it is a juvenile record I think based upon the fact that I repeatedly got locked up it might scare into thinking im a habitual offender.
