Well, I just found out that the UK NMC is possibly changing their procedure and requirements for overseas nurses trying to register. Here's a link to the FAQ about it:

Looks like they're not accepting new applications right now and are possibly imposing further requirements on those already registered. I am super curious as to what they're thinking of changing! My hope is that they would get rid of the IELTS for those with BSNs conducted entirely in English, but something tells me that it's not gonna happen...

Anyone else see this? Know anything?

Hi, I am looking into working in the UK. I am an ADN grad working a RN to BSN program. Just getting started but I am already overwhelmed haha. I have been working for over a year now as an RN in the ED.

I was looking today at the requirements and it states:

"Applicants who meet a minimum threshold but who do not meet the above requirements can address any short fall either by providing additional evidence of pre-requisite programmes undertaken or through completion of post registration practice.

The minimum thresholds which must be met for any consideration to be made are 1000 hours of theory and 500 hours of clinical practice from their original training. Therefore applications that do not achieve this level will be rejected."

Anyone know much about this? "or through completion of post registration practice." this statement to me implies that work experience would be considered, am I wrong?

Any advice would be amazing

This is seriously fascinating...this is a very new concept to the NMC (previously although they told me when I pressed them that there was a 1,000 hour threshold instead of the 4000 minimum they listed on their website), they've not only put down the actual information but seem to now be considering years of practice.

Okay, so because this is super new, I doubt anyone here will have an answer. You need to call up the NMC and speak to an officer, not the first-level phone people you get because they're generally useless and have told me incorrect information on multiple occasions and has been documented elsewhere. Ask them exactly what they mean by post-registration practice.

And...please post here so the knowledge is shared! Best of luck; I'm a traditional American BSN and got my registration last year (so thankful I did before the supervised practice requirement)

I see nothing on the NMC website that indicates that English exams are being done away with. Being able to speak good clear English will still be a requirements International English Language Testing (IELTS) | Nursing and Midwifery Council

cali student did you ever get information from the NMC are they including practice as clinical hours? it aslo no longer says you need to have a BSN

To be able to register with the nmc you need to have a total of 4600 hours during your nurse training. You still need the english language test.

Good morning,

Thank you for your email, and interest in registering with the NMC

All applications are assessed on an individual basis, but experience and training are assessed as a whole and in some circumstances the assessing officer will take in to account experience gained after qualifying.

So it seems like they will take into account the expieirience but its case by case

Applicants wishing to register with the NMC must have a minimum 1000 theory hours and 1267 clinic hours. This does not include self study hours.

If you don't have it, you won't get on. It's really that simple now.

I am planning to register as nurse in nmc should I pass my ielts exam next month...I am planning to secure needed documents that will be sent to them so as to avoid delays...what documents in particular do they require? And aside from being original, do they need to be authenticated as well by the notary public perhaps or red ribbon by the dfa? Reply is much appreciated :cat:
