I think most internationally educated nurses find completing the competency assessment supplement difficult. Care4nurses sometimes offers three day CAS workshops. If you are not already a member of care4nurses, suggest you attend an information session and consider joining.

Since previous posters who completed the CAS have not responded to your request, I will attempt to give you tips, (keep in mind I am not an IEN, I am giving the tips from a Canadian educated nurse's perspective).

Review the FAQ: Competency Assessment Supplement available of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

Review CNO's Entry-to-practice competencies for Registered Practical Nurses (2014) document thoroughly.

Search CNO for case examples of competencies, (they are published in their journal 'the Standard). Also, search BC's college of nurses for case examples (CRNBC/ nursing standards/case studies and practice resources). Reviewing regulatory bodies case examples will help you to understand how to apply the competencies to the scenarios. It will also help you to understand why you should respond to clinical scenarios/situations in certain ways.

Additional resources that may help clarify the entry-to-practice competencies are Canadian nursing textbooks such as; Leading and Managing in Canadian Nursing by Yoder-Wise provides scenarios on cultural diversity, delegation, managing information and technology, legal and ethical issuesâ€. In the textbook Interpersonal Relationships;Professional Communication Skills for Nurses by Arnold there are "case examples to help develop empathy for client's perspective and needs".

While reviewing the entry-to practice competencies, "look back on your nursing experience and identify a situation in which you demonstrated each competency in your practice" (CNO FAQ CAS). As you look back on your nursing experience, you may want to keep a journal to jot down the memories, then elaborate and describe the experiences and explain why they demonstrate the competency.

Once you have completed reviewing the literature and reflecting on your experiences, type up the CAS double spaced, cite any references, be very careful not to plagiarize (CNO FAQ CAS).

Consider attending a CAS workshop through Care4nurses for accurate information on completing a CAS
