Working 7 on/7 off (1900-0700)?

My recruiter notified me of a NP hospitalist position that has opened, and it would be working 7 on/7 off from 1900-0700. Does anyone work this schedule? Is it typical?

It's a typical schedule for hospitalists physicians. Not sure if it's typical for NP's in hospitalist roles. I attended a conference for hospitalist physicians recently and many were complaining of a high burn-out rate with this kind of schedule though some members of the audience were quite content with it and felt they had a lot of spare time when off (some even moonlight somewhere else on those days). If you can handle that kind of schedule, I'd say go for it. But make sure there is a way for you to get back-up support from physicians as you would be working nights,...and make sure you're compensated well.

Working 7on 7 off is a fantastic shift . it started in upstate new york . in a radiology department . it generally starts on a Wednesday or a Thursday for 10.5 hr shifts . the employer provides 7 hrs PTO (3.5 per week). the employee is paid @ 73 hrs with a half an hour a day for break. it is compliant with all labor laws . this shift was developed to cover the weekend /holiday problems naturally inherent to the traditional scheduling . it is not for everyone

I dated an ER-NP that did that schedule but was 11-2300. It was hard, especially the last 2-3 days but we enjoyed it because I was working registry as a RN so I'd schedule myself the same hours/days so we would have 2 vacations a month.

Ive known a TON of providers that work 7on7off as well as 14on14off.

Yes, take it. You get 2 weeks off per month. It's like having 2 vacations per month. Yes, the 7 on is tough, but what you get in return is more than awesome. Think about it....in a typical 28 days, I work 14, others (who are foolish enough to work 5 days a week) work 20! There is no comparison.....I will NEVER...EVER...go back to 5 days a week crap...EVER!
