Have applied for NP job w/UHC making yearly home visits for medicare advantage plan. Any one w/experience w/this type job and what salary range to expect. I have been a NP 1+yr w/lot of geriatric and homecare experience as RN and NP. I currently make $40/hr in part time job, only benefit is liability and some travel reimbursement. Thanks,

How long did you work there? I'm working w/ them now. Like in the suburbs. City does not work for me. The city. .. too much walking and visits are not clustered.

I work for UHG, and I love it! The visits do take about 45 minutes, but with advance planning and asking the member on the phone the night before to be prepared with meds, ready to give urine sample etc, the visit can be done quickly. On average I spend about 1 hr every night to button up assessments and to synch and send them off. You get a production bonus, which I got as a new NP (this is my first NP job) and my starting salary is 6 figures. You get money for CEU's, mileage reimbursement, and if there is a problem, they will rent a car for you. The members are rarely rude and by the end of the visits many feel as if I 'd known them for years. Some days run long, but then there are days where there are no appointments, and you still get paid for doing nothing. I hope to have a long career with them, they are very employee oriented and if you go to an area where you do not feel safe, they will arrange for a visit at another time with another person along, or the member is placed on a do not contact list. I have only had to bail out on two visits, one the person threatened me and the other was a demented older man who started to hit me with his cane, convinced I was trying to rob him.

Hi SStammer,

I am an Adult-Gero NP Student, set to graduate this May 2016. I have just started my job search and found UHG Long term care NP position quite interesting. I have been an RN for about 5 years and most of my RN experience has been with gerontological population ( Nursing home & Home care). I am in NYC, I am interested in working with them. Would you suggest for me to apply to their position now or wait until I get certified? I thank you in advance for your help.

My friend works fulltime with UHC house calls and makes 132k plus bonuses yearly, gas and mileage reimbursement. she sees 8 patients a day 4 days a week, she gets paid regardless of whether a patient cancels. If you are getting paid per patient I would assume its a per diem job. I remember when she was per diem the rate was still about 100/ patient.

Hi BKLYNBaby,

Thank you for responding to this thread, is your friend employed in NYC? I will be graduating in 2 months as an NP and am really interested in working for UHC, and was wondering if they would consider a new grad and when I should start applying. I live in Staten Island and see openings here and just don't want it to be filled by the time I have my certification lol. P.S. I do have home care and LTC experience as an RN of ~5 years. Thanks.

She is Nassau County Long Island. If I'm not mistaken that was her first NP job, I don't believe she worked elsewhere as a NP. She did however have home care experience as a RN.

If there are a lot of postings in your area it may not hurt to apply now, however they probably wont even interview you until after you have your license. So its really up to you, I have never applied for any job RN or NP until after completing and having my degree.

Hi BKLYNbaby,

Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I agree that I should probably wait until graduation and to be certified so this way I can be fully eligible for the position and can start right away if things work out. I appreciate your timely response :-)

Hi NYC-NP87 and BKLYNbaby,

I also live in Brooklyn and graduate with adult-gero primary NP degree in Dec 2016. I am hoping to work for a bit here and then move out West and do some travel NP jobs or something where I may be able to move around a bit with my family and find a place to settle- interested in what it would be like working for insurance company and if it may fit with my starting out in NY and moving west-ward goal.

Let me know how it goes

thanks

Hi Ashley,,

Just an FYI-it's not a good idea to use your real name as your user name. You want to be able to talk freely (barring HIPAA violations) and you don't want anything to come back and bite you.

Best of luck finishing school!

Hi Ashley,

I will be applying with this company after finishing my certification. I will graduate next month and hoping will be able to take the certification for Adult-Gero Primary NP in July. I will definitely keep you notified of what happens. At this time, I can't help you as I still have a month left for graduation. However, I don't think this experience will hurt you in the long run, it depends on what type of a traveling NP you would want to be, doing house calls/Office Setting or Long term care. I would think they will accept your experience in long term/house calls, not sure if it would be in primary care. I also know UHG has jobs all over the nation perhaps you'd like to transfer with them once you're in The west coast.

do you mind my asking which company you do this for?

Hi

I'm considering a regional travel NP position in the North East. Are you still at UHC? Do you know anything about this position? they told me is fairly new.

Thanks
