iNDEPENDENT PRACTICING AS A NURSE PRACTITIONER

Specialties NP

Published

I just had a general question about owning your own practice as a Nurse Practitioner. My father is a Physician with his own family practice. I was wondering, if i were to get my MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner, would I be able to take over my father's practice? He's planning on retiring and I think it would be great if i could take over the family business.

How exactly does it work? I have read that you need to have a "collaborating" physician with you, so i dont know exactly if you are COMPLETELY independent. We are from florida too, so i was wondering if there were regulations as to practicing in our state. I know some states dont allow you to be independent.

When I practiced in Florida you had to have a collaborating MD but that only means that they have to be available for consultation by phone, fax, cell or computer....the only problem you are going to have beyond that is hospital admissions, and writing narcotic Rx's....I dont know if the bill has passed yet to allow for the writing of Class IV and III....

It can be done but check with the state board for all the regs...

Good luck... :)

how are the opportunities for NPs in florida? I kinda wanted to work in a hospital setting before I take over the practice.

I'm not sure, have been out of state for the past 7 years.....but I think they are pretty good....need to get on line and check some classifieds in the newspapers in places that may interest you...I worked in Orlando, and there were lots of us practitioners....good luck.... :)
