Nurse Licensure Compact Q & A

Published

  • I currently live in California and have my whole life.
  • ive completed one semester of prerequisites regarding a nursing program, and I'm fresh out of high school. i'm going to a CC and am really looking to expand my horizons without going to a 4 year just yet.
  • Simply, I'm looking to move to Oregon with some friends because its cheap and a change of scenery. however if i were to get my prerequisites done in Oregon, will nursing programs in CA accept me?
  • And if i were to go to a 4 year out of state that isn't apart of the Nurse Licensure Compact, would i be able to return to California and pursue a career here? Nursing programs in California are so highly impacted, I'm looking to go to nursing school out of state. but want to move back to California when I'm older? would i be able to get a job?

yes... if you complete you're nursing out of state you could apply for your CA license by endorsement..

NCLEX is a national exam. You can go to school in Oregon and physically take NCLEX in Washington State for licensure in California, provided your program in Oregon meets all of California's requirements.

The Nursing License Compact just refers to states that acknowledge licensees from other states in the compact and allow them to work in their state without getting a separate license. You can apply for licensure by endorsement to any state or DC, regardless of its compact status.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

A multistate compact nursing license is only relevant if you are a legal resident of a compact state. As a resident of CA, the nursing license compact does not apply to your situation. A CA resident who obtains a license in a compact state (such as TX)!will only be given a single state license (only valid in TX)
