Greetings!
After binge reading the thread for 2015-2016, I decided it's time to start one for this year. I am a single mother opting to pursue a BSN after a post-quarter life crisis. Because I have multiple degrees, I have just about exhausted all of my financial aid options. I would like to hear from anyone applying for the scholarship. What's your story? What are your stats? Previous applicants and recipients I would like to hear your story too!
Starting at a private nursing school in May (with what little fin. aid I have left)
1 year AmeriCorps
1 year internship at group home for at-risk adolescents
5 years working with Dept. of Corrections (2.5 of which were counseling offenders)
EFC: 544
GPA: 3.9
Community service hours: 45
Location: GA
heya - same boat over here. I wanted to see if other future NP/CNMs wanted to be in touch as NHSC scholars. Its hard finding some advice and swap info with.
I made a little fb group for people. Log into Facebook | Facebook
Hey Lucky! Same to you! I wanted to talk with other NPs having to choose.
Log into Facebook | Facebook I made an fb group to facilitate conversation.
Same conclusions over here re: tax burden and HPSA score. Leaning towards NHSC cause of tax burden.
There are two ways to identify Critical Shortage. There are critical shortage facilities and critical shortage areas. Any facility in a critical shortage area is acceptable. In my area there are three cities that have 4 hospitals between them so all of those hospitals are acceptable. So you can look at it two ways and it may give you more opportunity if you look at the areas not just facilities. Any clinical nursing position in a facility in a critical shortage area is acceptable.Understanding job market is important as well. In my area new grad RNs usually start on med/surg floors. Being hired into ICU or Labor delivery is not likely. Need Med Surg experience before you can got to specialty floors. Just a thought. Do you have the site were you can check if places are critical shortage areas?
Thanks for the reply and information! I didn't know about the critical shortage areas or the job postings! I'll definitely be looking into it.
I live in an area where there are about 10+ new grad programs. I've met recent grads who have been hired into L&D, ICU, ER and other specialities through these new grad programs. One nurse at my clinical site said she was hired immediately in L&D with no experience. She did have to move but said after 1 year she moved back to CA and received offers from every job she applied to. She encouraged me to move if I could and get the 1 year of experience.
That's awesome. Where I am BSN new grads have a bit more chance to get on a specialty floor than ASN level. But most start with med/surg. Also look into disproportionate share hospitals in your state. They are also considered acceptable for critical shortage facilities.

Do you know where I can look up disproportionate share hospital or critical shortage hospitals? Is it through the links provided earlier?
The hospital, facilities, and service areas all need to have a score of 14 or higher?
