Greetings!
After binge reading the thread for 2015-2016, I decided it's time to start one for this year. I am a single mother opting to pursue a BSN after a post-quarter life crisis. Because I have multiple degrees, I have just about exhausted all of my financial aid options. I would like to hear from anyone applying for the scholarship. What's your story? What are your stats? Previous applicants and recipients I would like to hear your story too!
Starting at a private nursing school in May (with what little fin. aid I have left)
1 year AmeriCorps
1 year internship at group home for at-risk adolescents
5 years working with Dept. of Corrections (2.5 of which were counseling offenders)
EFC: 544
GPA: 3.9
Community service hours: 45
Location: GA
My gpa is 4.0 for my AA and efc is 0 I've worked as a cna for 5 years and volunteered with children's miracle network for the past 2 years.. I feel like I did really well on my essays too. Still no credit check that I'm seeing and no award email... I just don't get it. My orientation starts monday. My ASN program starts august 29th. Are they just awarding bsn programs?
There are two ways to identify Critical Shortage. There are critical shortage facilities and critical shortage areas. Any facility in a critical shortage area is acceptable. In my area there are three cities that have 4 hospitals between them so all of those hospitals are acceptable. So you can look at it two ways and it may give you more opportunity if you look at the areas not just facilities. Any clinical nursing position in a facility in a critical shortage area is acceptable.
Understanding job market is important as well. In my area new grad RNs usually start on med/surg floors. Being hired into ICU or Labor delivery is not likely. Need Med Surg experience before you can got to specialty floors. Just a thought. Do you have the site were you can check if places are critical shortage areas?

When I tried to look up places that we really eligible in my area it was a very confusing spreadsheet style with numbers and hpsa scores. What website did you use to check which areas are shortage areas and/or facilities?
This one is for searching facilities by county:
This one is to check if a specific facility counts:
HRSA - Find Shortage Areas by Address
This one is actual job openings in appreoved falities that you can search my zip code:
They have been awarding ASN and Nps too. Did you have a credit check?

I feel like I'm in the same boat as you. No credit check/no award. I have a 4.0, EFC is 20, have 7 years of volunteer experience, have a Pharmacy Tech license, and I have worked as a CNA 3.5 years. I also thought I was strong in my essays...
I honestly thought I was a strong candidate but I'm now getting super nervous about whether or not I will get an award.
The website goes down for maintenance tomorrow though!
