2019 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Published

Hi Everyone,

I didn't see a thread created for the 2019 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program yet. This will be my 3rd year applying. I'm applying as a staff RN with a HPSA score of 17. Hopefully, they open the application cycle soon.

Yes, I have. I received it immediately upon receiving the email. On my initial application, it was 3 weeks until I received a counter signature.

The 25% is based on the initial approved loan amount.

Okay good to know, thank you! I have another question for you, I tried to private message you but it wouldn't let me, did you pay extra on your loans per month or did you just pay what they gave you per month on your loans? If you paid extra it wouldn't affect your 3rd award would it? Also the amount they give you per month is already taxed correct? Did it affect your taxes at the end of the year a lot? Like did you have to pay extra taxes based off your award?

Thanks in advance for the information!

Just give you a little background, so it makes sense how I went about it.

I have multiple private and federal loans, but pay all the loans through Navient. I did not and have not consolidated my loans (yet). As a result, the interest rates vary on the loans. I also have a financial advisor and we discussed the best method to use the money for loan payment. Now to answer your questions.

I only used the amount I was given each month, but I had a specific method on how I paid each loan.

No, it should not affect the third year or at least per the call 2 years ago. But if awarded they have a call explaining everything and you can ask questions.

They provide you with the gross and net amount. Obviously, you only receive the net.

It did not affect my taxes; however, taxes can be tricky. I claim 0 dependents plus I’m married. So, those two variables factor in a lot. It does have the potential to change your tax bracket.

Oh okay sounds good, thank you I appreciate all the information! Crossing my fingers I get a countersignature! My situation sounds a lot like yours as far as the multiple different private and federal loans with different interest rates. I will need to talk with a financial advisor as well if I do get the award.

Thanks again!

You’re welcome & good luck!!

FYI: I went back to look at the initial contract. I got the offer 7/28 and a counter signature 8/30. It was NOT a speedy process. It moved fast after that. First payment came with 2 weeks of the counter signature and is like clockwork every month.

How do they have you prove that the money they gave you went to the right loans? I have one loan that I didn’t ask for them to cover but it’s through the same company as my other loans. I wasn’t sure how I’d prove the money they gave me went only to the ones they approved when it just shows that I paid so much each month.

They require specific documentation at the end of your contract. It must account for every dollar and show which loans it went to. This documentation can come from the Department of Education or your loan lender.

Did any of the NPs who do primary care get awarded? I see a lot of the SUD and people saying rural- however I didn’t see many who said they were specifically primary care.

I am an FNP in primary care and I applied for the Rural Community Loan Repayment and still under review.

Good to know- at least if I don’t get it this- I will have a better chance next year because I will have my PMHNP and in addition to primary care participating in SUD. I was hoping I got it this year though

sigh

When I logged in this morning to check on my status (still under review, WAHHHH), it stated the system will be down for maintenance on Saturday from 0800-1700. Last time something like this posted, another user on here suggested that it meant in previous times that they sent out a bunch of awards after. Just an FYI. Have a great day and good luck to everyone!

logged in this morning and I was changed to finalist for award!!
