2019 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Published

Hi Everyone,

I didn't see a thread created for the 2019 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program yet. This will be my 3rd year applying. I'm applying as a staff RN with a HPSA score of 17. Hopefully, they open the application cycle soon.

Congratulations!!! It must be a great feeling. I am hoping and praying I get an email. I thought the award goes straight to the government to pay back the loans. So they send it to your personal bank account? Do they track your payments thereafter? How does that work? Thanks.

They ask for your bank account information and transfer the funds to you. You then have to prove that you used it to pay your loans. That’s my understanding from the several APRNs I know who’ve gotten it, anyway. And they did ask for my bank account info to make a transfer of funds so it seems right. I’ll report back when it’s in my account.

And I got HRSA so maybe I am in the wrong thread but I think maybe the whole thing has just gotten mixed in at this point.

Has anyone tried the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program? I’m wondering if you apply for this program if it’s makes you ineligible to apply for the NCLRP. I’m looking at my options at this point.

From what I understand, there is no applying for the PSLF. You have to make 10 years of payments while working at qualified sites, and THEN apply. If you didn't do something exactly how they wanted over that ten-year span, you're disqualified. I think I read somewhere only a handful of people have ever gotten it.

I don't think you're eligible for the public service loan repayment until you have been in a position for 10 years? I know that the rules are very strict regarding what type of loans you have , etc. and have had friends that worked in public service for the required amount of time and then were not able to access the funds. So do your research.

Like everyone else said, you need 10 years of qualifying payments (on certain types of **eligible loans**) before you’re able to pursue the actual loan forgiveness. But if you do want to cover all your bases you can submit verification to confirm that you’re working at an eligible facility in the interim. If you’re going for PSLF they recommend submitting documentation of qualifying employment annually. Your HR department or loan servicer would be able to tell you what that looks like.

Thanks for your input everyone.
