Why do nurses feel the need to put RN on their license plates?

I have always wondered why RN's need to display their title on their license plate? I have never seen a teacher, lawyer, accountant, librarian, coach, housekeeper, CNA/PCT, chef, mayor etc....... put this on their license plate. Seriously, I don't understand it. I usually see at least 2 a day. Is this just in my area or does this happen everywhere. I would like to know what it is about RN's that feel the need to announce it to everyone what they do? I understand we have all worked hard for our license but come on these other professions have worked just as hard if not more. I know there are more important things going on in the world but I just want some opinions on this. :p

Specializes in ER, ICU.

Perhaps it's pride.

Specializes in LTC, Med-Surg.

So far I have seen MD, DD, LAWYR2, VETDOC, and of course RN. I have a bumper magnet on my car that says "proud to be a -insert hospital name here- nurse" because I AM proud of what I do!:nurse:

( maybe the same reason your name tag is 3dayRN instead of brgrflipper) LOL!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Some people's careers are deeply intertwined in their identities. I am not one of these people.

I act as an RN while I am at work. Once I clock out at the end of the shift, I'd prefer to not carry my work home with me. For me, nursing is not a higher calling from above. I view it as nothing more than a job and a means to an end.

Specializes in Developmental Disabilites,.

I have never seen one. Weird. I have seen MD, lawyer, judge, senator and mayor.

If you notice this is a nursing site. This site has nursing students, NA/PCT's, LPN's etc.... So, that is the reason I put RN in my title. If this site was only for RN's then I would not identify myself as such. Now lets say I was on a gardening site, then I obviously wouldn't state that I was an RN. Like I have said before it's my job not my life.

Specializes in M/S, Travel Nursing, Pulmonary.

Ditto what Commuter said.

There is a PT person at my apt. complex who advertises it on her plate. I always find it hilarious, considering that she is a tech. (transporter) not actually a physical therapist.

I once wrote a check at the store and signed "(insert my name) RN". Oh, I was sick from it when I realized it. My friends were laughing and laughing cause I make fun of people who do that. Heck, I had worked like 6 days straight..........I wasn't in the right mind set.

Whoa! Wasn't going for the jugular there, were ya!:lol2: I DO, in fact, notice that this is, as you say, a nursing site. Did you notice that when someone assumes that a joke is made at their expense instead of in general and becomes very defensive that it makes them look a bit foolish? :redpinkhe

Specializes in ER, Trauma.

I had "DTHFYTR" when I was in Maine. Hey, if cops can be crime fighters, firemen firefighters, then why can't EMS and Emergency Room staff be death fighters? Also have seen, NOCODE, DFBRL8R, BBCTCHR, BONEDR, IRNRN.

Specializes in Med-Surg/urology.

My mom used to have those RN plates about 10 years ago. But she got rid of them. Idk..I thought they were pretty nice. :twocents:

Specializes in L&D.

I've seen a teacher have a teacher type of license plate before. I can't remember what it said, though. I just know it was a teacher. :)

Specializes in CNA: LTC & DD.

I saw one that used to say Q2D PRN

I thought it was kind of cute since she did home health care and drove that car to see all her patients.
