Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

NO WE DIDN'T give dear old dad a bath. Why? He threatend to kill the nurse, the aide, and everyone in the room who was trying to calm him down. We did try to sedate him, all the versed, haldol, and fentanyl we gave him didn't work. He tired to hit and kick the staff, tried to head butt the aide. He broke the soft restraints and we needed security to help put him in leathers and he was still screaming that he would kill us. We had to beg you to come in and stay with him so he would calm down. Now we have him agreeing to a new IV and blood draw so quit arguing about the orders from the doc and let the nurse do her job. Since when did you get your MD?? So, NO NO NO we didn't give him a bath? What the H%^^ are you thinking???

To the alcholic who insisted he can't walk, feed him self, toilet himself, who lived independently prior to getting c-3 and c-4 fused, laying there naked, stinking, with a cervical colar on, refusing to let nurses see the staples, refusing to be cared for because "I'm in so much pain" urinating high into the air, squirting all over the place, with a urinal 2 inches from the left hand and a call light 2 inches from the right hand, that he insisted I place there not five minutes prior to doing the firehose job, who snuck over his siderails and took a poop in the toilet but dummy forgot to flush,,, I did say,," You are responsible to participate in your own healthcare, I can not let you lay there 24/7 and eat Vicodins and not eat food. Now get up and sit on the side of the bed, we are going to assist you to a bedside chair where you will eat your supper without being spoon fed."

Ok, I am probably going to get in hot water with some of you for saying this, but I am a 5'8" 300 lb. CNA who is in nursing school to be an RN. Yes, I know - I am fat, I have accepted that that is where I am right now and I do try my best to change that. So far change has come slowly as in 45 lbs off in about 9 mos. When you can tell me how I can find time in my day to go to work for 8 - 16 hours, work at clinical for 6 hours, do homework, clean my house, and track every BLT (bite, lick and taste) and find time to exercise for an hour every day, then you can call me all the names and say all kinds of nasty comments you want to about me and anyone else like me. For the record, I do not stuff my face with loads of fries, fried chicken, ice cream, etc. I eat vegetables, salads, drink water and diet sodas. Yes, I do go to McD's to get a salad, diet Coke and/or coffee. On the rare occasions that I do eat fries and a burger it is a kids meal with a diet coke and it gets logged into my daily food log and subtracted from my points ( I do WW). Oh, I move my butt, take care of myself, don't expect everyone else to do it for me, and I have actually seen and washed my crotch in the last 24 hours!!! PLease, please, please don't lump every single fat person into the same category and don't think that we all don't take care of ourselves. Losing weight is not as easy as saying "just eat less and exercise more" - that may be the basic premise but it doesnt work out that well in real life. I hope and pray that if I am ever in the hospital as a patient that I don't have any of the nurses who posted here with the less than desirable comments about obese people. Maybe some of us do deserve these feelings if we honestly know better and don't respect our bodies more, but not every single one of us does. I don't have a perfect answer to fixing obesity and I know that it can be handled with a lot of work and commitment, but unless you have ever struggled with being seriously overweight, please don't pass judgement. It is a world of he** to live in and I hope you are never there. Please don't make our lives any worse by giving us the disgusted looks and sighs (and believe me, we know it even when you don't think we do). Thank you.

Dear kiwilime81, I am certain I speak for all of us who vented here, I am sorry. Let me clarify, We are talking about patients / family members who are purposfully difficult, lazy and deliberately take advantage of the Nurse. When you are out of school and start work as a Nurse, you will get some of these people and then you will see what we mean. There are specific frustrations as well as a sense of humor in every industry that the general public should not be privy to. They would not understand. You would not believe the awful things I have overheard Dentists and Psychiatrists say. No one here would group someone in with anything that they didn't put themselves in first. If that makes any sense. All nurses love and care about their patients. It takes a certain type of person to do this job. They do their job inspite of the ones who take advantage. The title of this thread is " Things you'd love to "...... but can't - don't - won't. This forum is supposed to be a safe place to vent.:banghead: Everyone who posted here is not skinny, or in perfect health, never had pain or never been the subject of someone elses discrimination.:nurse:

Kiwilime81--

I have been overweight myself, and I know how hard it can be to lose weight. I guess the things that annoy nurses (or anyone) the most is not necessarily obese people, but mostly rude selfish people with a big sense of entitlement.

It's about people who won't try to help themselves or who expect others to do for them what they can do themselves----and I don't think it matters whether they are fat or skinny.

Say goodnight, Gracie!

I knew you were in WW when you mentioned the BLTs! I started it close 1 year ago (while in NS) and lost 25 lbs. I fall off the wagon all of the time, but it truly has been life-changing for me. I'm more accountable to my lifestyle choices (including eating and exercise), and I love that it's not a "diet" -- it truly is a "lifestyle modification!"

In any case, I applaud you. :yeah: You ARE trying to make a difference in your life. While, yes, it is VERY easy for us to pass judgment against ANY of our patients, I think the point here (at least that I made) is that it peeves me when my (insert an category, obnese or not!) patients won't make the effort to reach for the tray table and pull it over to him/herself! What you've described about yourself and what I've experienced with other (some, NOT all) obese patients is VERY different. Not ALL patients are lazy -- only some, and only those about which we're complaining her!

Again, I applaud what you're doing because there are many people who are content in their lifestyle choices -- whether it has to do with weight, smoking, drinking, whatever. Change is the key, though. But, sadly, we don't see this in enough of our patients (at least I don't...), and (for the most part) that's why they're they in the first place -- or 2nd or 5th or 10th!

I had a patient today that I wanted to prescribe, (Nurse Initiated Medication) some Viagra Eyedrops so he could take a long, hard look at himself.

Or a teaspoon of cement for the princess in bed 11, he realy needs to harden up.
