I feel like they should change the title of this site to "reasons why my job sucks"

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

Yes, indeedy, there is. And since it's such a wide spectrum, with pretty much a bell-shaped distribution curve, as far as I can tell, there's wisdom in ignoring the ones on the extremes as unhelpful (including the ones that are sooooo supportive and nicey-nicey that you never experience the challenges you need to grow), and learning to work with all the rest of them.

RUAS implied that all new grads think we are the "epicenter" of everything. Yet another of dozens and dozens on this site of someone trying to make a new grad feel so small. And you're right, I'm going to relax because I am 100% done with this website. That comment was the last straw. Come back when you graduate yourself and post questions as a new grad. Just wait. You're going to have so many rude, mean comments. Until you graduate and work your butt off for ungrateful patients and next to backstabbing, gossiping immature nurses, you won't GET IT. Goodbye ALLNURSES, after 4 years, this is my last post.

I have read and re-read this thread several times. The truth is, I am not responsible for what anyone reads. They are. Therefore I am only responsible for what I say. If I am good with what I say and you are not, you have the right not to read it. The little X at the top right is handy in that regard. There are also ways to block ever seeing a certain poster if they rub the wrong way.

There are times I take a break from here due to negativity. That is more about what I am choosing to read and more indicative of my OWN state of mind than any real change from the oridinary on this board. I am responsible for my attitude, my energy level, my enthusiasm and my own point of focus. So are you.

It can be noted nobody ever was missed who stomped their foot and huffed off in a "Goodbye Cruel Board!" snit. Read what speaks to you. Skip what doesn't. Manage your own fate. It is, after all, yours and only yours to manage.

Just want to take a moment and revisit something I want to advocate for: it's time to close the board to nurses only, members only. You can only come on a forum so many times and be distracted by the bNewcomers that refuse to search for information before posting another redundant thread or another thread from a judgmental nursing student or new grad. This is the break room for me, a place to freely complain and get advice anonymously. (Contrary to some posters who are convinced if you vent here you must be a witch in person). Just saying: I told you so!

I don't think that will ever happen here, and I don't wish they'd do that. You have to take the bad with the good, and I think that becoming a restricted group would really cut down on participation here. But there's nothing stopping you from starting your own board where you can restrict membership to whomever you wish.

There's issues with how do we prove we're nurses if we close it to nurses only. But it's a nice thought. It would be nice to no longer have people who don't have a clue educating us on what nursing means, and how if we were truly doing it for the right reasons, we'd never have a bad day! Won't happen though. I understand it. But it is nice to dream.

If it had been like that to begin with I'd probably never have become a nurse! I got exposure to what it was really going to be like before even applying to nursing school.

I didn't read the many responses, so please excuse me if I am echoing what someone has said. Nursing students have no idea what happens in the real world. They don't sit in on staff meetings to hear how we are responsible for EVERYTHING, the TV being out, wrong food on the tray, doctors poor choices, unlicensed personnel supervision, doing the job of unlicensed personnel, phlebotomists, PT, RT, and then how everything is our fault because we can only pick up so much slack. Our hospital just recently had a require in service about nurses bullying each other. None of us feel bullied by each other, just by management. Accept your 5 or 6 patients on a tough unit, deal with a PCT who has time to take 2 food breaks when you didn't even sit down to pee until 230, oh, and don't dare make a mistake or not chart some BS idea that sounded good to someone who hasn't worked a floor in years. My floor just had 9 RNs quit. NINE. Yeah nursing students, its all roses. We have to have some outlet to vent, to make sure we aren't crazy, so if you don't like it, feel free to not look at this site.

I used to love my job as a nurse, and I really loved my job when I was a (good) PCT, and I got to spend time with my patients. Now the satisfaction I get from knowing my patients think I rock, is hardly worth the mental abuse I face as a floor nurse. (and yes, I get kudos every month in those staff meetings based on patient discharge follow up calls)

One day OP, you will eat your words. If you can't handle the harsh realities of being an observer on this site, you certainly do not have the backbone it takes to be a floor nurse.

OK, so I have gone back and read the posts in this thread. (Can you tell I am nocturnal and can't sleep on my night off?) I like new grads coming to the floor. I love to teach those who are willing to learn, and I love to learn. When I was a new grad, I hung with the old bat society, I learned SO MUCH, and I value those ladies for their knowledge. I share mine with PCTs and new nurses, as well as seasoned nurses, because we all learn all of the time.

With that being said, we had 4 new nurses just come off orientation this week. Number 1 is awesome, she absorbs, she asks questions, and she gets along with everyone. She wants to work all nights, so I told her if she wanted, schedule herself when I am there, and I would help her out.

Number 2 is a know it all. Seriously, she knows everything. I asked her if she wanted to watch me clean out an ostomy bag. I know, not everyones favorite, but sometimes they are tricky, and I told her she could just watch, I would do the work. Her response "no thanks, I had a patient with one in school". Well, I have had a bazillion, and sometimes they still get crazy on me. Someone had a patient die the other day and asked her if she wanted to watch post mortem care so she would have an idea of what to expect, "No thanks, I had a death in school". I have only had 1 death, and I helped a coworker with post mortem the other day, because i wasnt familiar with this facility's procedure, so I learned soemthing. These are just things I overheard, but apparently she learned EVERYTHING in school. So yesterday, her first day off orientation. I handed her a patient with a high BP. I told her I would hang out til it was resolved so not to overwhelm her. While waiting on the doctor to return my page, I overheard her taking report, she complained about everything, it was too hard, she had 3 drips, blah blah blah. Welcome to the reality of being a cardiology nurse.

Nurse 3, Jury is still out. She doesn't get too concerned over SBPs of 190, needs prompting to call the dr.

Nurse 4, her nursing abilities are fine, she will do ok, but she has already rubbed us the wrong way. She can't do night shift, refuses, yet she accepted a job with a rotating schedule. Luckily for her, nurse 1 wants all nights. You cannot be a new nurse with an entitlement mentality, there are some new nurses out there that wait years to get a day position, and there are some new nurses out there would would be grateful for any shift.

So new nurses and students, there is a cross section of what we get when you are hired. Only 25% are just awesome.
