Comic relief...

Nurses Relations

Published

I'm in need of some comic relief this evening...

As a brand-new GN, I took care of a young male patient after an overdose. His synapses did not recover well after being anoxic for several minutes. He was so agitated one evening that we had to put him in a geri-chair at the nurses station. Well later on that night, he starting... ummm... pleasuring himself... which my co-workers found hilarious. One of them came around the corner to get me, telling me that my patient needed something. WELL... I came around and blurted out, "What's up?" IMMEDIATELY, my face (as it was told to me) was bright red... I quickly discovered what was up... as all of my coworkers buried their faces.

Since nurses have been fired for similar stunts, I won't be sharing my stories. I think in view of the current HIPPA regulations, if you wouldn't tell a 'joke' in front of a representative of your State Board of Nursing, maybe you shouldn't tell it.

I am content to agree to disagree Ruas61. Only because you are a fellow zombie lover. :)

Folks, I did not mean any harm by the post... I was simply pointed out my wrong choice of words in this situation... I still chuckle when I think about it... Of course the patient was taken to his room... My coworkers had the chuckle at MY expense... It really disturbs me that everyone is so quick to attack... And to the poster about HIPAA... There is no identifying information here... I work casual for an attorney specializing in medical claims... This comes no where close to being a HIPAA infarction!!! Please get off your high horse!!!

Hey, if this were a scene in a novel, I'd laugh... Even "comic relief" would make a funny title for a short story...

You have expressed this all as happening in real time.

Your client was masturbating, the nurses watched and found it funny.

Instead of acting immediately to preserve this person's dignity they summoned you to see it and have a good laugh at your reaction.

I find that appalling. Would it be funny if it were your husband, son, father, friend? I doubt it.

If you think that this is appropriate or funny, so be it.

You posted and invited comments.

Don't like them, well that is what comes with the territory.

And we are entitled to support the OP in sharing a story that could have been made up for all we know (or do you believe everything you read on the internet?)

Never once said anything like that or implied that you or anyone couldn't do so.

Only one to tell anyone to shut it down is management.

I never said you did... I was just voicing my support; same as you were voicing your dismay.

No worries than, eh? Have a good one.
