NP, hospital or doctors office?

Published

I'm a new nurse practitioner working night shift in an emergency room, I'm just curious if I am missing anything by not working in a doctors office?

Specializes in Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy.

What do you mean by "missing out"? Each specialty has its own skill set.

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

As an NP student graduating next year I would be thrilled to find a job in an ER. I am assuming you worked in some area of in-patient as an RN, so I feel like it would be less of a dramatic transition than starting in a clinic

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

I work in an outpatient private specialty clinic. I love my regular hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays off, the continuity of care, my salary, and the autonomy. It may not be as exciting as working in the ER, but at this stage of the game, I don't need excitement. If you have a job you enjoy, you're not missing out on anything.

Maybe "missing out" wasn't exactly the right way of saying it, I love the ER, love seeing new things daily, just wondering what others thought.

To be honest, I did a lot of home health as an RN.

I do enjoy the ER, challenges have always been good for me. I do get to work mostly autonomously in the ER, although it is nice to have an on staff physician just in case I doubt myself or just generally can't wrap my head around something. But boy would some daylight hours be nice, I feel like I've become a vampire!! Haha!! But my salary at this point suits the needs of myself and my family of 3 wonderfully. Just gets tedious having my skills questioned by patients on a regular basis based on my age!!

I would hate the ER!

Specializes in APRN, ACNP-BC, CNOR, RNFA.

I did an ACNP program, and did one of my clinical rotations in the ER. I loved it so much, it made me wish I had done an FNP program. BTW, I wish I had a night position! I hate getting up in the mornings.

I LOVE the night shift, I get off at 6 am, come home and take my kid to school, sleep while he's there, then I get to enjoy the evenings with him and my husband and then go to work after he goes to bed.

Specializes in FNP, Surgery.

The great thing about being an NP, is you can move around to different practice settings and specialities. I think you're gaining very valuable experience in the ER, and you can always move to a clinic setting if you want to!
