St. Alexius Bismark,ND

U.S.A. North Dakota

Hello Nurses,

I wanted to get some input about St. Alexis. I'm thinking about relocated to Bismark, ND. How is your experience so far?

I plan to apply to a hospital in North Dakota later this year. Family commitments prevent me at this time, however. Would St. Alexius be a good place to start? I'd like to start in Med Surg. I currently Live in Washington State (Seattle area) and it's next to impossible to get a hospital job here unless you have 1.) prior hospital experience 2.) a BSN and/or 3.) have an inside reference. Even then, its tough as the area is saturated with nurses and nursing schools. I'll move anywhere, really, but North Dakota seems like a good choice.

Lets put it this way.

I have turned down reference checks from evergreen, tacoma general. I have also turned down interviews for providence olympia, overlake, and UW.

moongirl250, just thought I'd let you know, I know you said you planned on applying later this year. St. A's is a great place for a new grad to start. I started as one and really enjoy my job. However I was told by my department head that because of the implementation of EPIC this fall, St. A's human resources is planning to undergo a hiring freeze from September to November. They will be bringing in a bunch of travelers that already know EPIC to help facilitate the change.

I would still apply anyway because they will probably hold onto your application but thought you might like this info.

I worked there also and just left after about a year. I started last year and now am back home with my experience and 2 job offers! I agree with DatMurse comments. Also, I'll add that St. A's is AWESOME!! I'm so thankful for my experience there in Med/Oncology and the wonderful people I worked with. If this hospital and environment and co-workers and managers were home, I would never leave my job at this hospital. I believe it is the ABSOLUTE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR A NEW GRAD AVAILABLE in the country today. The pay sucks, but with differentials and picking up extra shifts every once in a while (which is no problem if you want to) and flying home for a week every two weeks (yes, the managers really worked with me and my schedule to allow me to fly home for a week every two weeks and I was still able to get in my full time hours) and I netted somewhere between $1900-2200 a check depending on how many shifts I had during that pay period.

If you can do it, go to St. A's. They also will NOT hire anyone with a heartbeat. I've known one nurse who applied and didn't get hired.

good morning, kinbari08.

are you still in Bismarck? Is it possible to live there without a car? Thank you.

I'm no longer in Bismarck. I found a job back home in my home state. I was at St. A's for a year and a half.

I would not recommend living in Bismarck without a car. There is a bus system but I hardly saw the bus around in town. You can walk places I guess but it'll be a quite the walk, walking to the grocery store .

Hope this helps!

Good luck to you! St A's was a great place to work for my first job. If it wasn't so far away from home I would probably still be there.

I still miss some aspects of Bismarck. All the stores I needed were less than a 15 minute drive away, the commute to work was short, and traffic was nonexistent.

And yeah, your best bet would be to have it shipped. I drove my car there and back though and I live 1200 miles away. Once it's there you won't put many miles on the car driving it around town unless you plan to do lots of traveling with it.

Royal_Blue it would be very difficult to live in Bismarck without a car

Thank you 😊 I wish it would be closer to my home state. I like that everything is near by and no traffic. I listed in my application 3 units I would prefer: maternity, labor and delivery, and NICU. I don't know if they are hiring into those units. They probably don't have that many babies born in Bismarck since it is a small town.

Those units always seemed to be hiring actually! And the hospital doesn't just serve the city of Bismarck. People come from all over the Western and Central part of the state, and also Montana and South Dakota to seek care.

I am happy to hear that. The next day after I applied, I got a call from HR. She said she will pass my applications to these units and if managers would be interested, I will get a call with interview dates. I hope I'll get a call.
