Possibly moving to Charlotte, NC

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hello,

I am graduating my ADN program soon, and I just want a fresh start in a new city. Can anyone suggest hospitals that hire ADN new grads? Any reasonable and safe areas you can suggest would be great too. I plan on making a trip to Charlotte to look around and get a feel for the area but I am pretty sure this is where I want to be.

Any advice you can give to point me in the right direction would be so much appreciated!

Hey there,

I'm not super familiar with Charlotte but lived there briefly (1 year) during school so I'll try. The hospitals in and around Charlotte (most are Carolinas Medical Center or Novant) require new grads to apply to their 'new grad' application that opens a couple of times a year (the year I graduated, it was Feb for CMC and March for Novat). I know CMC used to require 6 months experience for any of their staff nursing positions that you see on the website. Not sure about positions in the outlying CMC hospitals. There are other hospitals you can look at, such as in Rock Hill or Gastonia (not sure the names, it's been a while lol). Charlotte can be kinda pricey to live in so you may want to look for a roommate or in a surrounding town. I think the north and west sides of Charlotte are to be avoided-generally higher crime areas. South Charlotte is where a lot of the growth seems to be. Matthews and Mint Hill are both nice smaller towns inside the I-485 loop but more expensive than outside it, I think (my impression from a brief look around). I used to live in Dilworth neighborhood right behind CMC-Main, which is a super-nice neighborhood but now quite expensive. I believe housing prices have gone up a good bit in the last few years.

Unfortunately, as a new grad, your options can be a little limited, but if you're willing to look outside of Charlotte as well, that'll broaden your options somewhat. Or if you're willing to look outside the hospital.

Good luck. Hope you can find your way to a fresh start. :)

If you're willing to come to Salisbury (about 30-40 minutes depending on what part of Charlotte you are in), you can get hired as a new grad at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center on one of their medical-surgical floors.

Thanks for the feedback I will definitely look at Novant Health and Rowan. Thank you for giving me a heads up for areas to avoid while looking for where I want to live. I have been looking at the new grads positions it still says spring graduates, and I don't graduate until September. I assuming they will be posting a fall graduates soon so I will keep on the look out for it. I been looking at what the city has to offer, I plan to make a trip down to Charlotte this summer to look around. Thanks again!
