Hi All,

I will be moving to Fayetteville, NC from CA to start my New Grad Progressive Care Residency at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and am soooo nervous. I was wondering A) if anyone has experience at this hospital and B) if anyone had any advice on what to study before I start my orientation. I haven't touched a patient since my last clinical rotation, which was in May of 2010 and am getting pterodactyls in my stomach. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

no, i'm in california, too. hoping to hear some recent reports about CFV. have you had any other interviews? when does the peds program start?

I've only had one interview in CA, and have applied to TONS of places. It sucks in CA doesn't it?! You would think nursing is a safe profession.

I don't know when they would want me to start though. She never really gave me a date.

I just want to know if that hospital is worth going across the country for and I am curious why they are interested in interviewing someone all the way in CA. How are the nurses treated and how are the doctors? If you want to PM me, you can.

hmmm. i am thinking of going there for a program, too. how odd that people aren't willing to post publicly about the topic. i'm scared!!!!! :confused::eek:

Seriously! That makes it seem like a scary place to work! I've never worked there, but I have lived in the area for a few years. My only experience was in the NICU and I had no issues with the care. I will say I have heard complaints from people who have been a patient there. It is the only hospital in the whole city, so it isn't like these people had any choice to go elsewhere locally.

I did hear that they plan on expanding or building a bigger hospital in a few years, not sure when though.

I work across the street from CFV. I worked there for three days in ICU a few years ago and deceided that may license was to important to work there. I took a huge pay cut but I love where I work at now. That being said the nurses where very nice and so the doctors were ok. It was just the patient care I did not agree with. Being a military wife have a worked in multiple hospital in multiple states, working up from floor nursing into critical care. From the patients I deal with I have heard mixed reviews from the greatest hospital to the worst. I think it really depends on what department and what nurse you have but that is with any hospital. This is what was listed on WRAL today

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services has notified Cape Fear Valley Medical Center that it is in "immediate jeopardy" of losing funding for patients, effective Nov. 13, unless issues found during a recent hospital visit are not addressed.

I did the residency program at Cape Fear last year. Loved the program was great being a new grad and helping you "get your feet wet" prior to being on your own. Theres really not anything you can study, you will have a lot of classes and you will learn most of your info from there. As far as the hospital... good luck!!! Kind of a nightmare right now. I just left in October, it was amazing when I started but has gone really downhill in the past 6months or so. I loved the people I worked with but the management has issues and they work you like dogs.. 6 patients at a time 4 or 5 of which probably should be in ICU but there aren't enough beds. Not trying to scare you, just being truthful. I hope your experience there is better than mine was. The biggest thing you need to work on asap is TIME Management! It will def prepare you for furthering your experience and prepare you for other jobs in the future. Hope I didn't scare you too bad, you will be fine just be prepared to WORK HARD! It doesn't shock me. I've heard bad things about working there as a nurse. I had my children there and everything was o.k., but I don't think they treat their nurses good. An ER nurse did tell me that if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!
