Apartment Walking Distance to Duke Medical?

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hey all I have accepted a new grad position at Duke and I start this February.

I am looking for a place in a safe area that is walking distance or a short bus ride to Duke Medical Center.

I am seeing a lot of reviews of some places that gives me the idea that some of these areas are not the greatest and then some others that I find to be over priced.

Since I am moving to NC from Florida I have no idea as to the area or what places medical professionals tend to reside in, so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

When are you moving? I am moving from FL to NC also :-) How far is Duke from the Wake Forest Area?

Most of the places that are walkable are crazy expensive: Lofts at Lakeview, Trinity Commons. The Heights at LaSalle and Station Nine are a little further out but still pretty close and walkable. Clairmont at Hillandale is where a lot of the nursing students and med students live and it's a quick drive. Colonial Village at Deerfield and The Forests apartments have a lot of students too. They are further out, but cheaper and there is a direct bus that goes to the medical center or you could drive.

Natasha, Duke is about 45 minutes away from Wake Forest depending on the time of day...

Good luck!

Cool one more Floridian in NC lol I'm moving up in February

Thanks for the info!

Are the buses pretty reliable for the most part?

Another fellow Floridian! Will PM you some info! :)

You can get on the Duke HR site and look at the bus routes that service the medical campus. You can also look at the Durham Area transit website to familiarize yourself with the areas around campus. Check out Bob Schmitz Properties--they rent a lot of single bedroom duplexes around the campus. Good luck. Durham is a town I love. Welcome.

Steer clear of Colonial Village at Deerfield: that place is falling down unless they DRASTICALLY remodeled it in the past three years and judging by the reviews they have NOT. I lived there for all of 1 month and my apartment flooded the first week I lived there (welcome to NC?). There were also palmetto bugs (a breed of mutant cockroach) and fleas, and a Peeping Tom in my window one night. I agree the places walking distance are pricey; on an RN salary at Duke it's not really feasible without a roommate, but those places are really nice. I sublet a place one summer in the Lofts and I absolutely loved it. Trinity Commons was beautiful but I had no cell service. Station Nine was nice and walkable too, but pricey and loud (lots of grad students who live like undergrads). There are places further out by Southpoint that are less expensive but still very nice, and not too bad a drive. Check out houses for rent as well. You might find some places downtown that are affordable. A lot of people like living in Chapel Hill, even though it's enemy territory ;) Wow, I'm actually missing Durham right now! Have fun, it's a great little big town.
