Noncompact State To Compact State

Published

Hi, I am currently licensed in NY. I plan on moving out west in the future and I am confused about the process of transferring my NY RN license to another state. NY is currently a noncompact state and I plan on moving a compact state. Have any of you transferred your license from a noncompact state to compact state? What is the process and requirements and how long does it take?

You don't transfer your license. You apply for a license in the state you move to. Then you will have a NY license, and a license in whatever compact state you're living in.

Go to the state BON of the state you're moving to, and follow their process for applying for a license by endorsement.

You call the BON in your target state, or check their website, and ask them what documentation they want-- everybody seems to have different regs. Some states want fingerprints and a CORI check, some want you to do a specific piece of CE on something (like child/elder abuse and reporting requirements), some want your certified college transcript, some just want the $ and it's yours. My record for fast was when I needed a Nebraska license. I asked the nice lady on the phone how long it would take and she said, "Is ten days too long? I could put a rush on it." And another state took like ten weeks. Another wanted me to present myself in person, I understand about fraud prevention and this was before Zoom ... but they relented after I said I couldn't fly 2500 miles for a ten minute interaction. Start way early just in case, LOL.

Link to all US Boards of Nursing websites found at bottom every allnurses page -- select information section "License by Endorsement" and follow instructions to obtain new license.

In order to obtain a multistate compact license in new state, will need to prove legal residency there, otherwise granted single state license.   Best wishes with your move and job hunt.
