Non-people oriented Nursing??

Specializes in cardiac/education.

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if there are certain positions in nursing that deal little with people?? I have been doing some investigation into my personality type and have found that while I love being technical and working with facts (like a medical technoligist, or microbiologist), I don't so much love relating to people on constant basis day-to-day. Is there a field in nursing that would suit me better....I am thinking Nurse Researcher, or management?? Nurse Educator? I like to hone my skills in one area and be really good at it and then possible teach it to others. What do you suggest?

Thanks!

Janice

Hi there,

If you aren't at all people oriented then i think the absolute last place you should look at is Nursing Education or Nursing Management... perhaps you are thinking administration? . Most levels of nursing deal with people in some form or another but some (i.e. quality control, insurance ect) do not deal as directly w/ patient care.

It is good that you are aware of your personality positives and negatives; it will help you decide what your future in nursing will be.

oh, I guess that makes sense. DUH. Well, I am not people oriented, but I don't mind teaching other people. It is the personal aspect of floor nursing that intimidates me. But who knows, maybe I will change. I just have always been introverted and not too talkative to those I don't know. Once I get to know people usually there is no problem.

Mostly I was just trying to find out what was area of nursing dealt with actual patients the least..Thanks for your reply!!

I know a lady who's an RN who works with workman's comp claims to make sure they're valid. I guess this group will trail people who make claims to make sure that they're actually as hurt as they claim (like the guy with the bad back carrying the 50 lbs suitcases through the airport, etc.). She compares their medical records with their behavior to see if they're lying or telling the truth. No patient interaction, and she really enjoys it. She told me the name of her position, but now I don't remember what it's called.

Hmmmm.... how about Nursing Informatics or a medical searcher (you need a graduate degree in Library and Information science but they will love you with your nursing background).

Informatics or perhaps research?

or you may try Pharmaceutical companies, doing research/testing etc. Marketing.....

Truth is, in any area of nursing you have to deal with people, but the types of interaction can vary. it's not ALL bedside nursing that exists.
