Yesterday I got a letter from SRMC in Virginia, where I was supposed to be enrolled in the LPN-RN program next May. It seems that the Tennessee State Nursing Board obviously feels that there are too many Registered nurses already here in TN and has decided not to approve the new SRMC RN program thorugh local CHS hospitals. And I had already spent a fortune enrolling in prereq classes and buying books. There are CHS hospitals in KY, does anyone know if there are plans to start SRMC programs there? I'm very close to the state line.

Is this really true??
My family and I are thinking about moving to Tennessee and this makes me a little nervous. I have been to Vanderbilt's website and it looks like there is a huge need for nurses so I am not sure what to believe.
Can someone please clairify this for me?
Thanks so much!! :thankya:

I work at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. Just last night I transported patients to respective floors and noticed one RN on 2 hallways. I asked her how many patients she had and she told me 11 and the other dude on the night shift with her had 12. I was shocked. She says the hospital needs nurses...and there are alot leaving this hospital system...not to RN friendly. But there are jobs...one problem is that this hospital will not let the RN's work much overtime...thus adding to the shortage. May I never be a patient here!!!

Please say it ain't so!
I'm starting my general ed. requirements next week for RN training. Main purpose was to be able to move to a friendly place in TN. My beloved south, Dixie, in other words. Of course it will be in about 3-4 years as I want at least 1 year working before a move unless something comes up in the area I want to move to and they will hire me as a new grad. :wink2:

I would do a more thorough investigation because maybe they did not approve the program for x number of other reasons. Sometimes you don't hear or get the whole picture so don't believe something until you do more investigation.
Don't get discouraged either. Hopefully you can resume your studies somewhere else soon.
Good luck,
Jess
I am slightly confused.
In another post regarding employment at a few hospitals in Nashville, the poster mentioned that she was not offered a sign on bonus while in Memphis they are giving a nice size sign on.
Is Baptist, Vanderbilt and the other bigger hospitals in Nashvile picky or is this common?

The OP's thread title, although misleading, is obviously sarcasm. The state has the shortage issues that the rest of the nation is having.
Take a look at the job postings for Methodist Hospital in Memphis (http://careers.methodisthealth.org) and tell me that there is no RN shortage.

i agree about there being a huge demand for rn's here in tn. i am currently taking a ma program because i got tired of sitting around waiting to get into an lpn program, but in searching for job listings on the internet and in the papers, haven't found much out there for ma's but have seen ads needing rn's in every town i can think of. (needless to say i've decided to try to go for rn after i graduate this program.) i check the job listings weekly and i have every confidence that rn's would have no trouble with employment.

I believe Tn still needs RN however this time of year with the budgets being reworked not many hospitals hire unless in an area with needs.. such as where I work. I work in PACU and we just hired 2 RNS. Now we have all our FTEs filled chances are when our case loads drop we will be losing time...the floor Rns are losing all kinds of time based on the number of patients in the hospital...might not be the case every where .

I'm not sure if there is really a nursing shortage ...or just a shortage of nurses wanting to work in direct patient care. I think alot of nurses just do the patient care "thing" until they get the experience and branch out into other positions. I know some nursing jobs are hard to get because there are plenty of applications...such as insurance case management.
