Night Shift in LTC- how do I get out ?

Published

I'm new to this site, but I hear that I could get some great tips concerning nursing issues.

I have worked at this LTC center for just shy of 1 year. I've asked several times to switch from 11-7 to any other shift. Two times I've even written the DON letters about this. I'm still waiting for a response.

Well, you could look around and see what other positions are available in your area with the hours you desire.

What should be my next move?

Probably Down the road...

Good luck to you.

Well since you have almost a year in I'd wait it out and start looking for another Job. In LTC the day shift is highly coveted though I don't know why! I work Swing and rarely have to deal with cranky doctor's or administrators as long as the paperwork gets done.

If your DON is not responding to your requests to move to a different shift, perhaps your next move should entail looking for another job.

Are there openings on other shifts? Is there a wait list of others that may have put in for a different shift prior to you? Where I work, turnover is low and the list for dayshift is long. And of course everybody thinks they should be placed at the front of the list...

They are hiring people straight into 7-3 and 3-11. There is also a RN who got hired after me , started 11-7 ( at her request) then decided she didn't like anymore and now she's working 3-11! And , instead of putting her in a rehab or acute floor, they put her an easy LTC floor.

Isn't that just wrong?

I would start looking for another job with the hours I wanted to work.
