Dear Nurse Beth,

I'm currently a NICU RN that works full time at Level III unit. I'm trying to relocate to a different state, but I want to move away from bedside nursing. I have issues balancing my anxiety & stress levels, so I've opted for applying to part-time NICU positions in the meantime. I want to do something that's non-bedside-related but have no clue what types of jobs to look for since I only have 2 years of experience. I'm open to pretty much anything, even if it's something that involves me working from home. Do you have any suggestions for non-bedside nursing jobs? Thank you!

Going part-time is a really effective way to reduce and manage your work-related stress. It helps you gain perspective when you're not at work 40 hours/week. Good for you.

Start by looking at the job boards of some of the hospitals where you'll be living. There really are many, many non-clinical roles. If you have your BSN, and with your 2 yrs clinical experience, you are a good candidate.

Most of these jobs provide on the job training with certification available later on. Here's just a few:

  • Utilization Review
  • Case Management
  • Risk
  • Quality
  • Infection Prevention
  • Clinical Documentation Specialist
  • Palliative care
  • Staff Development (Education and Training)

There are also jobs if you  want  to work from home (See 8 Work From Home Jobs)

Just know that once you leave the hospital setting, it can be challenging to get back in. Meaning you want to keep your options open :).

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
