What's the smallest birth weight you've ever seen a baby survive at?

We had a woman deliver tonight in the ED (she actually delivered before coming to us, baby was in her pants)- She was 26w2d gestation. The baby looked small to me, but we didn't really have time to focus on that. Found out that the baby only weighed 300 some grams, and was still living a few hours later.

Ever seen one this small survive? -A

It is the quality of life that the infant will have that is the most important thing.

I agree with Suzanne. Unfortunately, not many people realize what the quality of life for a baby this small will be.

That's what I worry about. I just didn't even know how likely it is that the babe survives. Thanks-Andrea

I've taken care of a 450gr baby that did very well over his course in the NICU.

He did perf on dol 2 and went through the whole vent/sepsis thing while he was with us. He had no bleeds and went home at 4.5lbs at 4 months old.

My daughter was 500+ grams 23 weeker and also did very well in NICU.

I know a lot of the little bitty ones have problems but I've seen my share that have done amazingly well. You just never know.

Seriously?

Severely IUGR? Did s/he live very long?

We had one about a year ago that was 390 gm at 26-27 weeks..real stressed IUGR baby. Lots of setbacks, but she did go home.
