Visitation and family centered care

Specialties NICU

In the interests of family centered care we are reviewing our policy on the visitation of grandparents and siblings. We are interested in how other units approach this.

Question #1: Are grandparents and/or siblings limited to certain hours for visitation? (i.e. 0900-2100).

Question #2: Do you limit the amount of time of these visits?

Question #3: Do you allow grandparents to remain at the bedside during physician rounds?

Question #4: Does your unit have individual rooms or an open concept (multiple bed spaces within an area)?

I know visitation has been a previous topic but, I need to relate the information to units similar to mine. Thanks.

Granparents can come in anytime except shift changes as long as they are idnetified as a vistor by the parents of the baby

Question #2: Do you limit the amount of time of these visits?

No, parents or grandparents can stay by the bedside as long as they want, except for change of shift

Question #3: Do you allow grandparents to remain at the bedside during physician rounds?

No, parents nor visitors are allowed in the NICU during rounds.

Question #4: Does your unit have individual rooms or an open concept (multiple bed spaces within an area)?

We have an open concept, two Zones, that hold about 8-10 pts. each, with four computer stations on each side.

We use the 2 band system already described. One visitor must be a banded person. Can have 2 people at bedside, no time restrictions.

Question #2: Do you limit the amount of time of these visits?

No, parents or grandparents can stay by the bedside as long as they want.

Question #3: Do you allow grandparents to remain at the bedside during physician rounds?

If they are banded, or are with a banded person, yes. Rounds are not done at bedside, however. Discussions take place in a conference room, only the exam is done at bedside.

Question #4: Does your unit have individual rooms or an open concept (multiple bed spaces within an area)?

We have an open concept, 4 "pods" with an X shape...one baby per bay. The bays do back up against each other, so there isn't privacy between the pods...we use portable privacy screens to meet that need.

We now practice "total family centered care" meaning: The parents are in charge of visitation...they are allowed anytime including rounds. They may have whom ever they wish the only limit is number at the bedside at a time (two per baby plus the parents). Sibs with the parents if no illnesses - all 24/7.
