Nurse, who specialize in pediatrics devote their knowledge and skills to care kids from infancy through the late teen years and the families. They usually complete training in pediatrics.

How does it feel to be a pediatric nurse? Pediatric nurse, you have to work around kids all the times whenever your shift is. Its nothing like playing with them, soothing them with your songs, getting to know each other! Blah!!

You are with sick kids. Kids who are in trouble with their little health or also dying with those serious troubles. I come to work praying or hoping desperately for a calm ICU with not much of a dying kids. Yes,I am an NICU nurse J..Of course! When you work in a mall you cannot expect people not to have holidays, Can you?? Well,it doesn't make any sense..well, I was saying of course there are gonna be a sick ones though I have to be strong and cool enough to handle those little creatures on sickness and on health. Yeah!! Sound like an oath.

They cry,oh those cranky noises! they poop, what on earth is that? Is that even a poop? And colour? Oh hell!! I.V lines?? I just opened it, it is now blown up in a minute?? Was breathing fine, Its Tachy in the consultant's round? I just had a count, Oh Oh! That nurse must be lying!!

Well, these happen in an NICU.

What you need?

1. Yes I am listing>> Patience: we need that kind of deep patience in order to be able to work in an NICU/PICU department. We need patience to watch over little human bodies. We need patience for that IV fluids to finish within an hour,to stop the baby ‘s cry,to watch for almost everything that happens slowly and steadily. Am I winning a race here? God knows!

2. Care: we need to have that sense of caring to these little ones. It irritates sometimes to leave a kid home and to care those on wards but this is life and an earning. Woops! but yes, if u care passionately and lovingly, it feels good and they heal better. They say and trust me its true!

3. Quick thinking: Yes, think quick or someone will die!! These little ones don't wait a bit, do they? You ought to have a critical thinking so you could manage these gasp and wrap up quick to revert or to let go. well, this is life!

I have no idea what to make of this. Use of the word "consultant" makes me think that the OP at least had some training or work experience outside of the US.

From Nepal :)

We use the word 'consultant' to the one who has specialization on a certain faculty!

Well, welcome to allnurses. I think it would be great to hear some your experiences working in Nepal as we rarely get posters outside of the US and Europe. What type of unit do you work on? How many babies do the nurses care for at a time? (This is known as nurse to patient ratio if you are familiar with that term). What kind of training or orientation do nurses have to go through to work with babies?

In in the US, nurses learn a little about everything in school and then specialize in an area after they graduate. Most NICU nurses go through a long orientation to learn how to take care of sick babies, like 3-6 months.

again, welcome to the forum

Thanks!

well,as soon as we complete nursing school we have to volunteer for a month or two. Then,we get to choose the field of interest. If you want to work in an NICU/PICU Department, you are taken to another health care center[ Children's Hospital] to take certain training for another month. And to work,we have to pass NRP too. There are other training at Hospital for ICU settings. Its quite a hard series to be certified to work in ICU.
