Baby Friendly Initiative

  1. I have been assigned (dumped upon more like!) the mammoth task of producing a breast feeding policy specific to SCBU/NICU that falls within the guidelines set out by WHO/UNICEF's BFHI. I need help!! I have checked out a few sites but the only samples of policies I have found so far are pretty generic and don't relate to the special needs of our compromised neonates. Any help would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way to reducing my current stress level!!

    Hi Kivibabe!
I just want to say that I know what it feels like to have an assignment dumped on!
We are always trying to be baby friendly and the most important thing I think is that The baby does not have a bottle before he gets familiar with the breast. So if the baby has to be fed orally before mum gets there we cupfeed.
    Hope this helps a little.

I suggest you get in touch with a Lactation Consultant and a La Leche League Leader. They both can help with the wording and actual real life situations.
You have an opprotunity to make great change for babies and their families. Maybe a change of attitude on your part would help.
