NICU Interview coming up, need advice!

Published

Hi my fellow nurses,

I am a new grad RN and have an interview this coming Tuesday for my absolute DREAM JOB! It is for a NICU RN at a large trauma/academic medical center in the Chicago area in a level III NICU. I have my heart dead set on this job (I have worked at this hospital for about 7 months as a PCT in the nursing registry) so I feel like that kind of helps my chances.

I just want to be as prepared as I can be and am curious as to what types of questions I should be expected to answer. I am meeting with the nursing recruiter (who luckily is the same person who interviewed me for my PCT position), and then after that will be meeting with the manager of the NICU. I want to ace this interview because I literally have my heart dead set on this job, I honestly don't think I have ever wanted anything more! So any advice the more experienced nurses could offer would be VERY appreciated! Thanks! In the meantime, prayers like crazy for me to land my dream job! ;)

Specializes in NICU.

Research as much as possible about the role of a NICU nurse, typical reasons why the neonates are in the NICU (feeders, growers, etc). The more you are educated about the job, the more they will know you are serious about the specialty.

Specializes in ER, Med-surg.

How was your interview?

Hi guys! Thanks for the advice! I think it went ok, but I don't feel overly confident about it :-/ like when I walked out of the interview for my current position I knew deep down I kicked butt and got the job for sure, I don't feel that way this time. I also won't know for a few weeks she said because I was one of the first people she interviewed. In the meantime I have been offered a job on an oncology floor at a level I trauma center. I told them I needed time to think because I also have an interview coming up next week in the HTU/CCU where I work now as a pct (also an academic medical center and level I trauma center) and this is also another dream job of mine cuz I really want to do critical care. At this point I'm so confused and I don't know what to do?! I feel like being a new grad I shouldn't be turning down jobs but I'm really hesitant about this job cuz it's part time. If it was full time my mind would have been made up already. I'm also in no hurry to start work, I fortunate to have a job and a place to live and my bills are paid for the time being. I'm enjoying having a life that is stress free! Lol I'm also completely terrified to start my first new grad job!! I'm so lost and confused right now!!

Hi just wondering what happened. Did you get the job? Also, what kind of interview questions did they ask you

Sorry, I never get on here anymore! I ended up accepting a job in the CVICU! So it really worked out for the best!! :) they asked a lot of standard interview questions like "tell me about a time..." Had to give examples of like conflicts I've had, times I've exhibited leadership experience, etc.
