visa options for nurses

there are temporary and permanent visas to assist overseas nurses work in the health care industry in australia.

demand for nurses

  • nurses are currently in high demand in australia. there are excellent career opportunities whether you want to emigrate to australia, or just stay for a few years.
  • whether you have a high level of skills and experience or need to gain additional skills, there is a visa to suit you.
  • most visa applications for nurses receive priority processing.
  • you can come to australia independently, and look for work, or arrange a job with an employer before you leave.
  • in australia, to work as a nurse you need to be in good health and have a certain level of education and experience.
  • to determine whether you can work in australia as a nurse, you will need to be assessed by either the australian nursing midwifery council (anmc) or the nurse regulatory body in the state or territory in which you wish to work.
  • the http://www.anmc.org.au/ has more information including links to state and territory nurse regulatory bodies.
  • if you wish to work in a hospital or other health care area, you will also need to pass a health examination which includes a chest x-ray.

if you are sponsored by an employer employer nomination scheme

  • if you are less than 45 years of age and have three years training followed by three years relevant work experience, you may be eligible for a permanent visa under this scheme. this scheme is designed to help employers that have been unable to fill a vacancy from the australian labour market or through their own training.

labour agreements

  • a labour agreement between an employer and the australian government allows an employer to recruit nurses on a permanent basis to fill vacant positions as they arise.

regional sponsored migration scheme

  • this scheme helps employers in regional or low population growth areas recruit skilled overseas nurses on a permanent basis, when they are unable to fill vacancies from the local labour market. you must have the equivalent of an australian diploma (two years full-time study) or higher to be considered under this scheme.

if you are sponsored by a relative skilled (australian sponsored) visa

  • nurses who can nominate a close relative living in certain regions of australia to be their sponsor and provide financial support should consider this permanent visa option.

if you wish to come to australia independently skilled independent visa

  • this permanent visa is for nurses who do not have a sponsor or who choose not to be sponsored. you must pass a points test that considers a range of factors including skills, age, english language ability, specific work experience and occupation. additional points are awarded if you have australian qualifications and work experience.

working holiday maker visa

  • if you are between 18 and 30, you may be able to come to australia temporarily for a working holiday. this visa allows you to stay for 12 months and work as a nurse with any one employer for a maximum of three months, provided your work remains incidental to your holidays.

background to nursing in australia

there are two levels of nurse in australia: registered and enrolled nurses. registered nurses are educated in degree level courses at universities. enrolled nurses are primarily educated through advanced certificate or diploma level courses in colleges of technical and further education.

there are six states and two territories in australia. each have a nurse regulatory authority which maintains its own register of qualified nurses. each nurse must be registered or enrolled in the state or territory in which they intend to practice.

there are mutual recognition laws in australia which provide recognition of registration across state boundaries. therefore a nurse registered in one state may apply for registration in another state under mutual recognition. there is a similar system in operation between australia and new zealand.

how to register as a nurse in australia

nurses are required to register with the regulatory authority in the state or territory in which they intend to practice. nurses can be registered as a midwife after appropriate education, but most states and territories require they must first be registered as a nurse.

nurses intending to migrate to australia

nurses who wish to migrate to australia under the general skilled migration category need to have their qualifications assessed before applying to the

department of immigration and multicultural and indigenous affairs (dimia) for migration. this assessment is undertaken by the australian nursing and midwifery council incorporated (anmc). if a nurse is eligible to apply for registration in australia, this will count towards points that can be gained for immigration purposes.

hey :) saw your msg on the board. you poor thing, no one was there to answer some of your queries. prolly they didnt know the process too. anyway, what you need to do is to make sure you're registered in the phils first. you need not to have any clinical experience for this.

then: (this is for the case of New South Wales)

a. proceed to the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board website (search it via google or yahoo) then look for that bit about getting REGISTRATION as A NURSE from OVERSEAS. The Board would require you to submit docs such as IELTS, transcripts, etc. Look for that PDF file on that website.

b. Submit these requirements and lodge an application to the Nurses and Midwives Board (via express mail)

c. Go to PRC and ask them to send a letter/certificate of registration to the Nurses and Midwives Board. (PRC should send this certificate, not you)

d. If you are deemed eligible (wait a couple of weeks), the NMB will send you a letter saying that you are qualified to undergo the OVERSEAS QUALIFIED NURSES PROGRAM conducted by the College of Nursing in Burwood, NSW.

e. Send this letter of eligibility to enroll to the College of Nursing in Burwood. Register/enroll for their Overseas Qualified Nurses Assessment Program. It is a seven week program which comprises of a 3 week theoretical and 4 wk clinical assessment. The program costs AUSD 6000 (More details on this via the College of Nursing website--->search google for their website. )

f. If you pass this Assessment program, then you can now be recommended by the College for Registration.

g. Once you're registered, now you are in the position to look for jobs everywhere :) Your employer would then sponsor you for your visa.

Good luck

to all friends and members, i hope this could help you as well.

No. The OQN Program is essential for all foreign-trained nurses to get registered with the NMB in NSW. :)

Thank you candysprinkles. I appreciate your help, thank you very much. I also found the link while searching for confirmation on the OQNAP. Hope this helps to all nurses friends that want to migrate to Australia.
