HI ALL!
I am a new graduate, with our pinning ceremony NEXT WEEK. Craziness.
Anyhow, I had planned on moving to Oregon, because that is where my Grandfather lives and I am ready to leave my home state of Alaska. Just too cold!
That being said, I'm hearing very discouraging feedback about Oregon's new grad employment rate.
Does anybody have any advice on hospitals that are hiring new grads in the OR area?
Is northern California or Washington looking better for new grads?
The one place I don't want to work is Alaska, and from the message boards, it seems that it might be my best bet for a job...
Any advice...? Tips...? Words of encouragement?? :)

I am a new grad (June 2011) and there are no jobs here in Oregon. I have a temp job that is ending this month and no full employment options in this area at all.
If you have an opportunity for a job in Alaska, take it. Get your 1-2 years experience and then you can go anywhere.
Good luck ~

Having experience doesn't necessarily guarantee employment anywhere, anymore.

No, but she'd be a lot more likely to get a job than she is now as a new grad. There are job postings in OR for experienced nurses, but none for new grads. If she has the opportunity to get a job in AK, she should do it and then take a look at the market outside of AK in a year or two.
Words of encouragement.... get a job in AK if you can. There really aren't jobs here in Portland. There are a couple of hospitals which have internships for new grads and they are crazy competitive. For example, Legacy Healthcare is one of the largest hospital systems in the Portland metro area with 6 hospitals.... the only way to get a job as a new grad at a Legacy site is through the Legacy Versant Residency program. They only open positions a few times a year and just interviewed for the next round of hiring in February. They only have about 30 slots and had over 500 applicants!
Sorry... what you have heard is true... there are virtually no jobs for new grads here in Oregon.

San Diego recently had a new grad opening for one of the hospitals here. They were looking for about 30 new grads as well and had over 1,100 application. They only reviewed the first 500 applications. I'm not sure how many they interviewed, but I think they chose people to interview based on the answers that were put on the applications, not on the resumes. So if you think Portland was bad, think again...

I know its a little late but are you interested in Washington at all? I live in the Tacoma area and we are only 2-3 hours away from Portland (I drive there all the time to visit my family). Look into MultiCare Health System, they have a residency program. I actually work at one of the hospitals and the website says they have the ability to hire RN residents every month.
Oh intersting. I actually used to live in Tacoma when I was a toddler. Thanks for the info.

All of the Portland metro area hospitals have actually just instituted a hiring freeze, and some (Legacy) are actually proceeding with layoffs by mid February, so, no- Oregon is NOT the place to come as a new grad.
