What are the best psychiatric hospitals in NYC?

U.S.A. New York

I am planning on going into psychiatric nursing. Can anyone tell me which are the best hospitals in this field in NY? I think I want to do mental health and addiction as a dual disoder. Does anyone know anything about the Payne Whitney Center ? I am looking to work in a place where there is a lot of nurturing and understanding and caring for the patient. Thanks Krisssy

Hi- Ages ago I did my psych rotation and a bit of work at Payne Whitney. I also knew a few friends who were there. The actual, famous building is now torn down. My opinion- very overrated. But still, a decent thought. Long Island Jewish at Hillside has always had a good reputation, but in these days of budget cuts, who knows. They used to have a cottage system which was very humane. I don't know if this still exists. Roosevelt Hospital on the West side of Manhattan had a decent reputation (again as far as a psych place can be). I personally had a superb experience at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, which is of course, affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Somebody just told me about a position at Columbia for just detox? Anyone work there or know about it?

I think that special detox with Columbia is actually located in Westchester county.

I am going for an interview for Columbia Presbyterian NYC-68th St. McNeer Unit-addiction. If anyone has heard of it or knows anything about it, please let me know. Thanks. Krisssy

I think the Westchester one may be long term. This is short term medical detox on a med surg floor. I think I need that first before I learn about long term care-you know learning about the medical symptoms etc. of a drug detox and what is done for individuals detoxing. Krisssy
