Westchester Community 2011/Accredited??

U.S.A. New York

Hello

Anyone PRESENTLY attending WCC's nursing program? Particularly the evening program. Please list ALL the prerequsites you had to take before entering the program. I have no prerequisites at all. What do I need? I spoke with a representative at the school who by the way I waited 30 minutes to speak with, who confused the heck out of me before she transferred me to school security????? I'm getting nowhere, and need to find a school fast.

I'm also looking into Cochran, but would love to attend a school where I could take my prereq's and nursing program in the same school.

By the way... are they accredited or not? Does this make a difference?

Any advice would be appreciated.

anyone?

Hi,

I am currently in the evening RN program at WCC. I just finished my first year. Prereqs for the evening program are Eng Comp 101, Psych 101, Sociology 101, nutrition, AP l, AP ll, microbiology (you can take while in program but I don't recommend it), Pharmocology (also corequisite , but recommend taking beforehand). Also if you didn't take biology or chemistry in high school you need to take the equivalent at WCC. I think you also need a humanities class (foreign language, philosophy, western civ) and 2 credit PE class. I hope this helps.

Thank you jake22. At what time does the night programs start, and how many days a week? Is the school really as competitive as everyone says?

Hi,

For the evening program you must have completed all core classes plus prereqs. The program is very competitive. Over 800 people take the TEAS annually and there are only about 36 seats per program available. They hold about 8 seats for LPNs wanting to become Rns (4 seats per day and evening program)and then they give people who failed the previous year a chance to repeat the semester they failed. Every year WCC hold seminars about the program at the college. I recommend you attend one of these sessions. They are held in the fall. If you look on the WCC website you will find all the information you need. Good luck to you.

Oh I forgot, the night program is one 4 hour lecture, one 4 hour lab unusually Monday and Wednesday evenings 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and one 7 hour clinical on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 3 to 10. They offered Saturday clinicals for my class (and the classes before mine) but they changed it to only weekdays with the new class coming in this Fall.

Thanks! Actually, I attended a nursing open house a week or so ago. They focused more on the RN program, and I've recently decided on the LPN program. So... I've decided to start off with the LPN program (which will be in a year). I have no prerq's completed. I'm starting from scratch. I was told it would take a year to complete my prereq's, and I may or may not even get into the LPN program.

I'd have to take the accuplacer and hopefully score good enough. I've been out of HS since 1991 and have no college credits. Started college in 1998 but left because I was involved in a bad accident. So... no prereq's.

Besides WCC, what other schools may be easier to get into, that are not so competitive, and have limited seats?

Oh yeah, what's this thing with the school not being accredited? Are students of the school being hired???

Graduates from WCC get hired. The school has a great reputation and the pass rate on the NCLEX is high. However hospitals in this area aren't hiring. If you are willing to go to a rural area, I'm sure you"ll get a job. I'm going to complete my BSN after I graduate from WCC. I have a already have a bachelors degree in education but I never taught.

Thanks for all the info, and good luck with school! Anybody have experience with the LPN program at WCC???

Hi i am also looking into the lpn 2012 program for wcc. I haven't took any of the recommended classes yet also. Does anyone k now anything about the the college of westchester for the medial assistant specialist. Or anything about the program?? I wanna be a lpn then a rn. I currently work as a home health aide and I love nursing.

Would taking a phlebotomy/EKG and CNA course help my way in the LPN program? Also what is a good review to start for the TEAS exam for the LPN WCC program.

@ raspysunny--How where the counselors there?? Are the doing the fresh start program??

Hi,

I work at The College of Westchester. We do not have an lpn program, but we do have a medical assisting program which includes a mandatory externship at a medical site prior to graduation. I would be happy to connect you with our Allied Health chair if you have questions, and our career services folks about job prospects. Please feel free to email me through this site if you like. Good luck to you in your future education plans.

Sincerely,

Mary Beth
