SW Boces Entrance Exam

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi everyone!! I applied to Southern Westchester Boces and I am scheduled to take my entrance exam next Thursday. I am looking for anyone who has attended or has recently been accepted to the school. Or even anyone who knows anything about the test and scores needed in order to get accepted. I'm getting very nervous about the exam and any advice would be appreciated. I am curious to know how students are accepted - what scores are they looking for? Thank you!

OMGGG wait i dont understand?? if u made it into the 78th percentile how is that bad I thought you had to make it into the 50th percentile?? or is it because you didnt get into 50 percentile on ALL THREE parts?? please let me know omg im more nervous than ever...i know how you feel trust me..im working at a Dr's office right now and they think im going to nursing school in the fall which is why i have a job...if i dont get in im going to like move to a different country i cant bear to tell them i didnt get in..

Abenitez- Nurseladyy is right...they did say that aboiut people who are close to the cut off..esp if you had such a high score in one of the three...i spoke to a student there after the test who said they care more about reading and vocab than math, b/c math can be learned and you cant really with english. ill bet i did better in eng than math as well so let's hope theyre right...

Aw thank you Ladies. Now I feel that there is still hope... I was so upset when I received my scores. And I studied for two straight weeks of JUST math. I will definitely be keeping my fingers & toes crossed for all of us, as well.

Dianedc123, even though I made it into the 78th percentile, they look at each individual score from my understanding. They all have to be over 50.... and I got a 47! That's why I asked in a previous post if they look at the total score or each individual score...But from what NurseLadyy said, they look at the individual scores. Don't worry, lets all just think positive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you both & I'll keep you posted on whether or not I get a call. There are 3 test dates left.. the last 1 is June 10th.

Ok ladies, lets make 5 buss days after the last exam a cut off point? This way we are not driving each other crazy. Now I feel I did great in the math. I was on youtube doing ratio and proportions and decimals so I mastered it. Now the reading, OHHHHHH BOYYYYY..... But I really feel that your going to get called because thats still above in 2:3(a ratio, lol).

Dianedc123- Don't panic. Did you see some of the other testers. They had the same worries. Also, i saw one cheating. That person was still doing the reading portion and answering questions as the instructor spoke. If I saw it, they saw it and remember what they said, your not getting a call if you cheat.. one down...

Dianedc123- I'm going to research for another program and will let you know. Can you do CNA and keep your pride at work? That's only a 2 month program a lot of places. That was my back up plan. CNA 2 month course, work as until I find another LPN program. I need the bridge steps I have children.

Abenitez422- Did they say that in the letter what percentile your in is the 78th? and then broke down your scores?

Yes, they first gave the total score & they gave me a total of 78 percentile and then underneath it, they told you the percentile for each section. They provided me with a explanation of the scores and they said my total percentile (78) means that I did better than 78 percent of the national norms group (the 3,408 students that first took the exam when the exam was first created)

Where are you both located? I know that there is a boces that begins their LPN program in January & another one that begins their program in March. If I don't get into SW boces, I will be trying to get into the January program... and if I don't get in there, I will be going for the March program... etc. etc.. Also, there is a school in NJ called Eastwick College.. they are accredited and they have an LPN program that begins every 3 months. They also have a LPN-RN bridge program.

I'm in NYC. If we do a program in NJ dont I have to getb my liscense and work in NJ?

Nurseladyy- i would need to become at least a medical assistant to keep my job (10 month program and every $$)- i just dont want to waste my $ on something like that or CNA b/c when i become a nurse it would feel like a total waste you know what i mean? i eventually i want to be an RN..but i didnt want to spend time taking all those pre-reqs then applying and my GPA from college was too low to transfer into 2-yr BSN program at a college :( i wouldnt have minded the LPN-RN bridge since id be a nurse while doing the RN...but to become a CNA-RN is a very long process i believe. if you can wait, id suggest that you're better off trying again next yr than waste money and time becoming a CNA (and they dont make much from what i hear), you should def look into it though! and dont give up hope yet im keeping my fingers crossed we all get in!! if u feel confident u did well in math, a lot of people said they did terrible so pretty good chance ur in the high percentile

Abenitez- would you mind sharing ur math score? only b/c i KNOW i prob got at least 10-15 wrong since i didnt even have time to read the last ten..just curious what score landed u in the 47th percentile...:)

No, you dont necessarily HAVE to get your license in NJ after you finish the program... I know a lot of students that go there and they commute from Brooklyn. I work in a hospital and from what I'm told from the nurses that I work with, it is SO easy to get your license in another state.. you just have to pay $60.

I dont recommend going to get your CNA. I know many of them get paid like $10. I work in a hospital in Westchester as a Nursing technician... I didnt shell out $600 on a CNA program to get certified. The hospital provides you with training to be a nursing technician and the pay is pretty good.. way more than $10. You should look into the hospitals up here in Westchester.. because they all run the same way and they are usually always hiring nursing technicians. Also, they give tuition reimbursment so Its very helpful when it comes to paying off loans.

Numerical Ability Total.....36 of 50..... 47 percentile

Basic operations / whole numbers 6 of 10

Fractions, percents, decimals 17 of 20

Using skills in applied situations 13 of 20

36/50 landed u in the 47th percentile??? wowwww i think im screwed....may i ask ur language and reading?? lol sorry to drive u crazy im just sooo stressed right now

I totally understand and thanks for the advice. I have time but I don't. Complicated. I just have to be enrolled into something within the next 2months. Pay wise, i am not working right now so anytyhing is better than no $$. i know a spot out East that hires CNA and pays $18/hr, LPN rate and LPN's make RN rate...A jewish nursing home... It really depends.. I am so going to look into that, Nursing Tech. What are you job duties? Do I need anything or can i apply with no experience?

Dianedc123- Calm down babes. time will tell. I tought the exam was going to be worse then it was. i mean it was something, however all the things I studied(exponents, square root, cube root).. At least the first few we know for sure we got right, add, divide, multiply... I left 5 questions were I had to guess. It's something like the lottery only with a much gtreater chance. You Never Know...(breathing heavily....lol)
